I was not making light of AIDS... I have a cousin who died from it. I was basically stating that "just about anything will have some good changes". AIDS has made some young people smarter about safe sex, which prevents unwanted pregnancies and other STDs. That's about it. Bush has made young people realize why they need to vote. For the good change, that's about it. You can talk tax breaks and safety for Americans all you want but most of those cuts benefit the rich, fuck the poor, and the world is arguably a more dangerous place now that we've gone pissing in various hornet nests in the middle east. It's debatable, but one general economic theory is that war is good for the economy. From a little reading, it's thought that the short quick ones (IE, the first Desert Storm) are great. They get tech going, and open up a lot of jobs. This one, at this point, is definitely costing more. Still, the outcome isn't relevant here, just the motive.
I have to argue that the negatives definetly outweigh the positives on this one. I could also say the economy isn't much better off than it was post-911. If you haven't noticed our economy has been floated by real estate latley and that's starting to go away. All those people who rushed out to get realator liscences are going to be selling corndogs at the mall again by this time next year.
I'm definitely not advocating it. Even one of my very well-off colleagues said, "I'm not going to vote for Bush just b/c he's going to save me $50k a year in taxes. I think war is almost never the answer." I totally agree w/ him, just on a smaller monetary scale.
The only economy that has benefited from Iraq and War on Terrorism is the defense contracting industry. Profit margins have never been better.
Thing is I seem to remeber paying just as much in taxes when there was a Democrat in the white house as I do now. So I got a couple of $300 checks. I still pay roughly 25% of my income, that hasn't changed. Oh it's definetly changed for Microsoft, Exxon-Mobile, Monsanto, Haliburton, McGraw-Hill, any all the other super huge corporations who really run the country. Those people are laughing all the way to the bank.
