I was just eying through my stacks of games when I began to realize how many I had forgotten of. Ones that your run of the mill gamer have never heard of, or ones that people throw aside as average but for you holds some special appeal.

Anyway, the game that made me want to make this thread is Disaster Report for the PS2.

It takes place in a giant city built upon the ocean, and its just one disaster after the next as the city is crumbling to its ultimate demise. Earthquakes, Fire, Flooding, Tidal Waves, Godzilla attacks, you name it. All of the sequences and characters you get to meet feel fairly realistic, and the game allows you to choose different paths that ultimately lead to one of multiple endings.

I know there was a sequel, but alas, JAP only. So jealous. :crying:

Anyway, anyone else have any game like this close to your heart?

    Final Fantasy VIII
    Shenmue I & II

i'll name a few later, but those are the ones that captivated me when I was younger.

I really like Landing High Japan, the arcade game. It's a flight simulation game where you fly airliners across Japan. Unfortunately there was never a console port, but there's the Jet De Go! series which, from the looks of it, is fairly similar. I've never played that one, though. None of those games are particularly well known, in the States at least.

I don't know if unofficial goods count, but they are obscure... I'm into pirates a lot, one of my favorites is Squirrel King on Genesis. Good memories :)

Agreed, everyone hated on it just because they were so blown away from the previous game. I loved it though, Zell is a bad ass FF character!

Holy hot damn! You have put a game on my going to buy list. But honestly, searching for that game and seeing the box art on Wikipedia... definitely pretty disastrous in itself.

Haha nice, just read up about it, sounds fun but doesn't sound like it would draw a crowd. The cab looks awesome.

Also @ Bramsworth, Squirrel King wtf? Are we talking totally homebrew or another game hacked? Totally searching this now! Any game with that title must be supreme.

CrAzY: Am I wrong by saying, that in some ways you would love the D games, and it spirit sequel known as Enemy Zero on the Saturn ? or am I wrong ? anyway I would not say I play an obscure game as such, which I go back to. Except Pools Of Darkness from SSI. But then again that game is not really obscure, and the same goes to Eye Of The Beholder series, so count me out of the discussion. Except for asking CrAzY about what kind of games he likes.

Off the top of my head...

Chakan: The Forever Man (Megadrive) - This is an average action/platform game and the MD catalogue has far better examples but the short opening sequence (describing Chakan's duel with Death) struck me as one of the best intros to any game I've played. Simple but brilliant.

Scarface: The World is Yours (Wii) - Very under-rated. Still one of a relatively small selection of Wii games aimed at adults. The intro which shows clips from the movie is fantastic, the actor who does Tony Montana's voice did a great job, and using the Wii-mote for aiming feels natural.

Warriors Orochi 2 (Xbox 360) - I reviewed this game and gave it an 8/10 score while most other reviewers gave it less than 5/10 (has 4.4 critic average on Gamespot). I accept this type of game, which is a barrage of high-speed action, won't be for everyone but for me it's one of the most enjoyable two-player (split-screen) experiences in recent years. It won't win any awards for dialogue or story but it's a hell of a lot of fun!

Totally homebrew. The version I first played years ago actually was the Super Mario World version which ditches a couple of stages from the original with levels ripped from the SMB on Mario All Stars. And you play as Mario and Luigi.

Being so damn used to pirates now I still always am surprised when others aren't familiar with games like this =p

Disaster Report is indeed very cool. It was released in europe as SOS The Final Escape.

The sequel was released in US and Europe as well, called Raw Danger. I'm sure you can find it without much trouble.

Anyway, back on the topic. The ones i can remember right now, all from PS1.

    Philosoma
    Star Gladiator
    Gunners Heaven
    Porsche Challenge
    V-Rally
Motortoon Grand Prix (a.k.a. MotorToonGP2 in Japan)

I'll post again when i remember others.

Battle Engine Aquilla on Xbox. I really love this game, but it never seems to get mentioned.

Omikron: The Nomad Soul on PC.

Tried to finish it a ton of times and for many reasons I never could end it. Now I can't do it since it's a DirectX6 game and it won't work in newer cards...

I also used to play Captain Tsubasa on the Famicom a lot when I was a kid, I don't know Japanese but that didn't stop me from playing it over and over again :p

Dynamite Cop (Dynamite Deka 2) [Dreamcast]
This game is so bad, it's actually good :). The cheasy story line and the crazy gameplay makes this one of my favorite games of all times :D... (I mean come on, how many games do you know where you can throw pepper in the eyes of your oponent! And then hit him with a french roll)

Funny you should mention this, I remember loving it when I was younger. Went back to it recently and couldn't believe how ropey it was. Amazing the shit we used to put up with.

The first Streets of Rage at least ;-) but yeah, Dynamite Cop is hilariously cheesy, although I prefer its predecessor Die Hard Arcade/Dynamite Deka on Saturn.

Dunno how obscure it is (probably is if you haven't played a lot of PC games), but I love Stunts: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-CITIXlw_T4 It's a racing game that kinda copies Hard Drivin' with all its crazy loops, tunnels and jumps, except in my opinion it's much better. You can even design your own insane tracks.

oh yeah, Captain Tsubasa was the SHIT on the famicom. Especially #2, awesome graphics, amazing gameplay and I m not even a big RPG fan. Kemco's rabbit had done a magnificent job with those games!

Eternal Darkness (not internal) was an awesome game too. I don't think it's obscure or average though...one of the best games of Silicon Knights..come to think of it Too Human was the only one I never bothered with.

After some thinking I started to wonder, Which games are really obscure? I was making a list of all the PC Games I played back in the 90's (I was a PC user), and today 90% of them are really obscure If you didn't play them back in the day. It's incredible how time can make some things almost completly vanish. Anyway, here are my picks:

-System Shock 1 and 2: Both are great, but the second is better in my opinion.
-Blood: Most underrated game EVER! The game is amazing from start to end, Caleb, the weapons, the dialoge, everything about that game is awesome.
-MechWarrior 2: Playing with Mouse + Keyboard was good, but with the SideWinder it was a completly different experience.
-V-Rally 2: I loved that game, it even had WideScreen support!
-Flight Simulator '98: It looks awful today, but I loved it when I played years ago (I was 6 when I first played it in 98)
-Midtown Madness: IIRC, the game had a mode in wich you had to perform some tircks in a limited amount of time, that was great.
-The Dig: The best LucasArts adventure game, the atmosphere, the characters and the alien planet were all really well done.

There are many other obscure games that I liked, but the list would be too long.

I was thinking of some of the more obscure games I have played - although obscure to one person may be well-known to another. Thought of a couple.

They Stole A Million (C64) - To me this game seemed ahead of its time. You hired gang members from a selection of dodgy characters with different abilities (similar to the much more recent Gangsters) from safe-crackers and explosive experts to getaway drivers. Then, using blueprints of the building, you planned how each gang member were going to move around and what actions they were going to take. Each movement and action used up time and the aim was to pull off the perfect heist before the cops arrived and arrested your gang. Well worth checking out!

Space Station Silicon Valley (N64) - This game shouldn't come under the description of "obscure" given that it was developed by DMA Deisgn (the team behind Lemmings and went on to become Rockstar North) but I've been surprised by how few people know about this. You play as a microchip and must jump between different animal robots in order to complete a variety of puzzles on each level. If this game was a little longer and was released now, instead of 1998, I think it would sell a lot better than it did back then.
