You've hit the nail on the head there. It's nice to see that VR tech has finally matured and the one factor that could shackle it will be price. As for me, I'm still waiting for the one killer app that makes VR stand out and I'll be on board. A bump in video game immersion or 3D video isn't quite enough. I really hope something incredible can be done with virtual sculpting/painting.
$599 is quite cheap compared to what they want to sell it for in Europe – €741 shipped, that'd be over 800 USD. Game over indeed.
Was really hoping for $400... This struck a blow with my excitement for the rift. I haven't wanted a new piece of tech this bad in years.
I was expecting you know, $300-$400. I wasn't expecting $600! That's how much my PS3 cost at launch!... Oh wait that has been covered in here already... Wake me up when the full dive VR tech from Sword Art Online becomes a reality. I'll wait until everyone else puts on their headsets before I put on mine though. I rather be able to log out instead of being literally stuck in a game.
Ehh if they made it so you can logout and not die in the real world, then I would play it. If they based it on the ALO arc, you could fly and really feel like you're flying!
exactly what you are afraid of using a head set for game and becoming either comatose. or in .hackGU stuck in game
Just saved some pretty good money by NOT pre-ordering... I mean £499 + another £250+ for a graphic card to use a fairly unproven product (though I did try DK1 and DK2 and loved it) I'll sit and wait to see what the competition has to offer...
Price is a bit of a shock, especially in Europe as they say. I tried the DK2 and it was very impressive, but I've also heard really good things from the Valve/HTC Vive and am very curious about it. What is a great deal is for the people who originally backed the KS with $300 for the DK1, they will now be getting the consumer Rift for free.
Perhaps the freebies drove the price up a little, but it's great gesture from them to do that, if I'd back the KS I'd be very pleased indeed
If PSVR launches at $300, then you can get it + a PS4 for the cost an one Rift. That will be one hell of a selling point.
I've seen some grumpy old people brush it off as another Kinect or motion control. BUT I've been waiting for VR to come for 20 years. The Rift never appealed to me because it's PC and for many MANY reasons I am not a PC gamer. PSVR fixes that problem. They won me over with Rez VR, and of all things 100 ft Robot Golf. Tekken 7 will support it. Think of the implications it could have on survival horror.
i got my last gen ps3 (last model i mean) for around 280$ AUD and so far ive had it for like 4 years. last time i played it was in 2013 XD, i should not have bought it so close to the end of its life
Everything I've read here seems to be more about economics and less about the tech, which is valid IMO. It's pretty much like everything else tech. $600 for new gen anything is WAY to rich for my blood as well, so I wait. First adopters will always pay more, and the companies know that. So we all wait a year, the price drops, the tech gets better, and we move on. I don't blame the company for wanting to get a little extra fat out of the backs of folks that want to be the first on the block to say they own one. Flat screen TV's were the same way and now you can pick one up for a tad over $100 bucks pretty much anywhere. I will say, people using these rigs have ALWAYS looked ridiculous, however the integration seems to be quite smooth now compared to where it was a decade ago. For anyone that has actually used one, or a similar device, I'd be interested to hear about the following: Does this thing feel like 10lbs of bricks on your neck? Can you play with it for hours at a stretch without getting a headache? I mean lets face it, if you can't marathon your favorite FPS with it, IMO it's not worth having.
I'm very unsure yet excited abot this VR headsets... if the psx VR will be around 500$ i'll be out of the issue and it'll skip to next console generation
