I did set up a Filezilla server in the past, it's quite easy, much easier if you have a fixed IP from your ISP. Now I have a NAS with an FTP server so no need to leave the PC on. As for places, good question, can get expensive in terms of bandwidth.
I can potentially host.. ..I've quit hosting x-u on a hosted server, and just switched to my own home server.. I'm upgrading my internet to a 10Mb connection, so it should be able to handle a frequently used FTP.
How much would you be willing to spend pm on such a hosting service? I'm guessing your looking for a dedi?
My neighbors have an open AP with 16mbit Comcast...plenty of bandwidth to share! Assuming its DC or something.
Not worth the risk. I don't know about the US legal system, though, but something like that can get your equipment confiscated around here. I read about a similar case in the german "c't" magazine ("Magazin für Computer Technik", one of the most-respected german-language magazines on this topic): an unemployed guy regularly used the open wireless LAN of one of his neighbors (who had a flatrate BTW). No damage to the neighbor's computer, data or connection at all, but nevertheless he took it amiss and sued the guy. Police got a search warrant and confiscated the computer; he was found guilty later, meaning he won't ever get his equipment back.
Yes but I wouldn't be seriously hosting anything on such a connection. Hes just dumb enough to leave it open and my wifi switches onto it when my connection dies to my WRT. Annoying really when you've managed to keep a static ip on your dsl.
Then again, if youre dumb enough to use someone elses connection, which could easily be setup to monitor your data, you deserve whatever happens.
Those sites are terrible for perm storage. I think £20 pm for an OVH server would be a good idea It would pay itself via donations or something...
I think I probably have a spare server and a good connection someplace to hook it up, but what sort of storage capacity is required? Shiggsy
Were there any interest in a 0bit site ftp? I have just found some old harddrives and can come up with quite a lot of official Nintendo documentation and tools, and I guess others have loads of stuff as well. Would be very nice to be able to save everything in one place. Shiggsy
Looks for something in asia, or russia please. Any ideas? I would prefer something in a former soviet country.
