I use desolder gun to clear out the holes, install the header, bridge the bt point on the Aladdin, ground D0 to screw hole, put it back together and it doesn't boot.

Will power up for 1-2 seconds then powers down, it tries again for 1-2 seconds with a faint beep, then the 3rd time stays powered up but nothing on the screen and power light flashing red/green.

Re-flowed the solder joints on the header but didn't redo the D0 to ground. I used a small wire as a jumper on the Aladdin and looks fine. Double checked and mod chip is plugged in the same way as in the picture.

Try again and same results as before.

Remove mod chip and remove D0 from ground and the Xbox powers up and works fine.

Have you put the chip in the correct orientation and also on the correct pins? As it doesn't use the full header.

Post a picture of the pin header install without the chip

Boots now since after I spun the mod chip 180 degrees around and the first screen has the upside down Evo triangle in the top left corner.

Looking for a tutorial as to what to do after a mod chip install.

I put in a burned hexen cd and able to boot that up. Looked around at the options but haven't gotten any farther. I want to get it on the local network to FTP all the saves over to my computer then install a new hard drive, prep it, ftp games over so I can play them from the hard drive.

You should be able to start a FTP server from the hexen disk, otherwise install unleash X dash.
Iirc it doesn't touch the save data folders

if youre still interested in doing the tsop, heres how you can get the box to run unsigned code without booting off of the modchip:

    install the modchip
    boot the hexen disc
from the hexen disc, install a softmod
soft mod and tsop/chip boot shortcuts are incompatible
therefore if you install the softmod, the box will not boot upon reset unless you remove the chip
remove the chip, and you are running on a soft mod
at this point, you should have already bridged the tsop flashing points
boot the xbox on the soft mod, and put in the hexen disc
from the hexen disc you will need to use the tsop/chip menu to flash the tsop
i personally use the Evo M8 Plus bios f&g 256k variety for all my installs (technically the one i use is this bios edited for fan speed at 50% since i sell boxes like this locally and hate to have returns because of heat issues)
once you successfully flash the tsop, yet again tsop/chip and softmod xbe shortcuts are incompatible, so your xbox will no longer boot
this is easily solved by using the tsop/chip menu on the hexen disc to build a new disc, once this is done your box should boot again with tsop
allowing you to save/keep the modchip to either help friends or for other fun stuff like doing failed softmod recoveries (my single biggest business flow from original xboxs)
another interesting thing to note, is that if you do installs like this, the hexen disc is also great for FTPing to if you build a standard image you always use, if you boot the xbox with the disc in, you get no "file in use" copy errors if you are copying over a fully setup install from your computer while FTPing (i usually delete everything on C and E, and then copy over, something you cannot do if youve booted into a dashboard.

Edit: i forgot to mention, i can walk you through the other things you are looking to accomplish if you are interested, FTPing games over and such, i highly recommend a crossover cable if you understand how to make one work for direct connections between computers, as FTPing large amounts of data to an xbox takes a VERY long time depending on quite a few things... also, xboxs with heat issues and other issues dont like to run for as long as it takes, another reason i up the fan speed, copying over 500gb via ftp to an xbox can take hours... and some xboxs get unstable after running that long... so anything you can do to shorten upload time works wonders

2nd edit: make sure you pull the stupid worthless clock cap off of the board... it ruins more xboxs than i can count, the cap goes bad, leaks everywhere, causes major malfunctions, destroys traces (specifically the ones responsible for eject/power, which then need to be jumpered across the board directly to the chip that handles them) and the ONLY thing it does is saves the time when unplugged. *IF* you remove the clock cap and get error 16 (iirc) when booting, this is because the xbox will not boot with NO time set, this happens if you were on a stock dashboard, removed the clock without ever booting it up and setting the time, and it had been off long enough to lose the time, the solution is to get the box booted ANY way you can, once its booted once, it should reboot fine.... an example of this would be to use a chip/hexen disc to get a softmodded console temporarily booted to get the time set... many explainations can be found online if you google xbox clock cap, but the net result is... yank it, its garbage.

I haven't checked this thread in a while since the xbox has been sitting in the corner and been occupied with other things. Thanks Mobius_trip for the long reply and going into detail!

-I have the purple evo triangle in the top left now that the mod chip is installed correctly.
-booted hexen cd (Shambles Edit) that I downloaded from another site but its only 2 year old version with xbmc. It boots with stock drive majority of the time. Sometimes I get the "your xbox can't recognize this disc" message though.
-Hexen CD > xbox admin > system > network control > enable FTP and it static at 192.168.10.250 with a spare router I have. I make some changes on the router so I can ping it on my windows 8.1 computer
-use filezilla on the PC to FTP it after a quick google search to find out username is xbox, password is xbox, and use port 21
-I copied the entire contents of C, E, X, Y, Z to the windows PC. Didn't do D because that is just the hexen cd. Point of this is backup is to preserve the game save files that came on the xbox already.
-Not sure what to do at this point since my goal is have a larger drive in the xbox, copy save files that I just backed up to the new drive, transfer game iso files to new drive, and play xbox games!

-Should I install a soft mod from hexen cd? Which one? Does the softmod get installed on the mod chip or where?

-I drop in an old 200gb IDE drive that works fine but has been in sitting for the past 5 years. Turn the xbox on with the hexen cd still in it and I get the green screen stating the xbox requires service. More googling and so I leave the error up for 20 seconds or so and try a power off then back on and same luck. Tried couple times and no luck.
-Next I drop in a fairly new 250gb sata drive but using a sata to ide board/converter. This time I hear it reading the hexen cd and underneath the xbox logo I get the "linux" text like its going to boot off the cd but nothing happens. Try again with same results.
-Drop back in the original hard drive and it boots hexen cd fine. I launch XBPartitioner and let it format the disk with default settings that XBPartitioner has.
-E drive now shows its 4.2gb even though XBPartitioner said it would be 3.86gb.
-I select install xbmc and its been stuck extracting at 1% for 30min or so now. Was hoping to be able to ftp over Fuzion Frenzy game on the stock drive to boost my confidence but making this post instead for help :)

Tbh, it sounds like you're having disc read errors, with the chip functioning and the time set on the motherboard, which it sounds like you've already accomplished, you should be able to boot the Hexen disc with ANY IDE drive plugged into the hard drive connector on the IDE cable, if you're not able to, it's because Hexen is failing to load, which DVD drive do you have because some don't like to run home brew (Hexen) off of CDs and some don't like to run it off of DVDs, I find thompsons typically prefer DVDs and samsungs typically prefer CDs... Try burning a DVD copy of Hexen and using that. I bet it'll solve your issues building the new hard drive. There are of course always other ways, like I could walk you through a chimp/hot swap method for building a new drive, but that's a huge pain in the ass for what is almost assuredly a DVD drive issue, either the drive doesn't like the media type, or the drive itself is bad in some way.

Shows how much attention I pay, It's been so long that I posted this that I just replied by linking from the notification email without actually remembering the thread, the thread name is 1.0 xbox help, you most definitely have a Thompson DVD drive, and I'd be willing to bet that like most of them, yours doesn't wanna load homebrew off of CDs. Burn a DVD, it'll work.

It is on a DVD so I burned another copy and doesn't boot. Tried the original burned copy from last year and it boots on stock drive. Tried the SATA to IDE adapter and not luck but then tried the 10 year old 200gb IDE drive and that worked! Got screen saying unleash X has detected a new drive so I had it format it. Hexen boot screen is now up but now what? Install XBMC from disc to E or F? Or should I get the latest and FTP over? Does XBMC launch games? Asking since "TSOP/Chip" dashboard options are:

    UnleashX
    EvoX
    XBMC on E
    XBMC on F

    It formatted the 200gb as:
    C: 500MB
    E: 4.8GB
    F: 123.4GB (and I'm surprised this isn't bigger since its a 200gb drive)

    I FTP over xbmc4xbox latest version 3.5.1 to E:\Apps\XBMC
Also FTP over a few game iso files to E:\Games\

Boot hexen cd, use file explorer to launch E:\Apps\XBMC\default.xbe which launches XBMC from the HD and not disc.
Go to programs>Games>Add source E:\Games\> and I don't see the games I transferred. I can see the iso files using filer explorer when I'm not in XBMC though.

Was going to start completely over by re-formating the drive so I launch xbpartitioner, hit start, then Y, reboot, and HD still has same files and folders as before such as XBMC and Games.

Why is all this so difficult and where is a straight forward tutorial on what to do after a chip is installed?

More googling and find out you extract the game into its own folder. So I extract the game on my PC to its own folder, FTP that folder over, boot hexen cd, file explorer, go to game folder, and launch the default.xbe to play the game! Its a rough start to what I want.

In a clear well worded fashion explain what exactly you want to achieve.

When you do I will send you a zip with everything setup for you, all you have to do is FTP it over.

Now I need to know if you are softmodded or hardmodded (chip) & what xbe your bios looks for if its a chip.

As its extremely easy to setup an Xbox, but then again I have been doing this since late 2002.

What bios did you flash to the chip? or is it just a stock m8 bios?

If it's stock m8 bios (evox logo in top left of x logo) then it's C:\Evoxdash.xbe

sorry yet again hugocraft, i fall off the face of the earth during school....

so lets cover some of the things you discovered in your voyages
    1. Sata drives are a bitch, basically you need JUST the right drive and JUST the right sata to ide adapter for them to work, and the right adapters (proven ones) run around 20$, considering you can get a 750g IDE on ebay for 60$ish, not worth it imo... go IDE
    2. your drive formatted to 123g even though it was 200 because you have to change the settings during that screen where it shows all the values, i believe you push left or right on the d-pad to change the format type... i cant remember and my xbox isnt set up right now.... but you should be able to open up a list of keys in that screen that shows you what to push.... change it to max value on F, splitting it between f/g isnt really required any more.... but may slow load times the more empty your drive is (i know that seems backwards but it has something to do with the chunk size) THEN once its set like that, you hit black button (i think) to write the changes and format.
    3. how to add games to XBMC, its actually pretty straight forward, whatever folder you put your game folders in.... ex: f:\games\ you need to add that to your xbmc, go into the folder in xbmc (depending on your skin, its usually under programs i think) and then you hit white button (i think... once again memory fails me) and there will be a little popup screen, select Add Source, youll get to name the source (Ex: Games) and select up to 2-3 directories for it to draw from... choose your games folder... then add the source, once this is done, it should auto populate that new folder (Games) with anything it can find a default.xbe for in the first layer of subfolders.

Lastly, since im so shitty at replying, but i have to check my email at least once a week for school stuff, please email me with questions instead of waiting 6 months on here... Mobius_trip@hotmail.com
