Sokko Seitokai aka Sonic Council is pretty good. There's a Saturn version but it used to be an arcade game... plays a bit like Groove on Fight or even KoF, has amazing graphics and nice music. I'd say another hidden gem could be Samurai Deeper KYO for PlayStation - based on the manga of the same name, this fighter has some really awesome graphics and can easily be compared to Last Blade (it's doesn't offer the same depth of gameplay though). It's cheap and PS-exclusive, very recommended IMO. Pocket Fighter is also often overlooked as most people prefer the "grown up" Street Fighters with a more advanced system. This one features amazing special moves, a fresh new system (you get crystals to collect after hitting your opponent) and most importantly: extremely funny backgrounds and gags. Since it's really really cheap for the Saturn (maybe 5-10 bucks), this one is a must. It has 4MB RAM support, too.
Pocket Fighter was included in the Street Fighter Alpha collection for PS2. Noted also for being the first game with a SF III Character appearing outside of SF III (Ibuki)
Virtua Fighter 3TB Sega Dreamcast. and not a popular one but i really enjoyed War Gods on the N64 Guilty Gear series Fatal Fury series
Guilty gear is HUGE and I mean HUGE you can't go to an anime convention and NOT see at least one Sol or Ky or the occasional Jam. Fatal Fury? yeah no that put the Neo Geo on the map. VF3tb not really War Gods however I agree it doesn't get much love at all.
VF:3tb is a quality dreamcast and virtua fighting game it didnt get a who lot of love at the time which is why i listed it. Guilty Gear is something i've only recently taken notice of after years of gaming and when growing up and even now 90% of people i know and knew wouldn(t know what it was,(which is a crime i know) i dont go to many(any) anime conventions and if i did until recently i wouldnt have recognised the characters, and again thats why i listed the Guilty Gear Series. again more of the same with Fatal Fury series, except i've known about that since my Sega MegaDrive days, the Neo-Geo although awesome was never big here at all, so thats why i listed Fatal Fury
Virtua Fighter 4 is rather forgotten and overlooked, most people know about Virtua Fighter, VF 2, VF 3 but 4 is usually skipped? Any how I own the game but I haven't played it, for some reason I got 5 before 4. Another series is Fighting Vipers, not many people I know have played it, let alone heard of it.
fighting vipers, VF 4 and fighters megamix are on my to play list along with last bronx. i agree with you on VF4 its the only one i havnt played yet, dont know why i have VF, VF2, VF3 and VF5 conspiricy???
Maybe it's just where you live in the world. Over here in the states VF 4 EVO is considered one of the best PS2 fighters, which is always been weird to me. VF 4 on the PS2 is just...WRONG. Same with Guilty Gear But Fatal Fury, yeah I don't get that it is THE Neo Geo Series.
VF4 is not overlooked at all. It was really popular on PS2 when it came out and received high critical appraisal.
It probably is, there is very few knowledgeable retro gamers here... You mention any of the fighting games we're talking about and they look at your puzzled, even when you mention the Saturn. HOW CAN YOU NOT KNOW ABOUT THE SATURN :< VF 4 on PS2 was odd, probably why I missed it - I'd never think of looking for VF 4 on a Playstation...
The problem with most of the overlooked fighters is that they were overlooked for a reason. They often sit in an unhappy middle ground where they're not as marketable enough for the average guy to buy and/or lack the fundamentals for the hardcore crowd to put their time into and make them last. I find the rumble fish as a good example of this, its a very mediocre game, the pacing is too slow, the animation didn't sit well with many and the fundamentals were iffy at best. On the other hand there's far more which are just bad games, the sheer amount of post melty-blood doujin fighters I worked my way through only to find less than 10% of them could be considered playable. E.g. Skullgirls on xbla is a wonderfully made fighter made by a team of crazy mvsc2 pros with beautiful animation and music, but has an artstyle that's a bit too niche, isn't accessible for a new player and doesn't have enough characters or useless content for some to see as worth their time. There's quite a few games people have listed including some SNK games and the VF series which are really not overlooked. VF is possibly the 2nd most influential fighter ever made but after VF3 I feel they just skilled themselves out of the mass markets and whilst pretty isn't flashy enough to be popular.
if Asuka 120% was released now, I think it would be very popular amongst the fighting crowd now, and newbies too. But visually it looks like a half assed doujin game even though it doesn't PLAY like a Half assed Doujin game. Hell I wouldn't have even made this thread if not for that game. Skull girls, I know people who don't even play video games that are into it, Personally I don't like it It feels unfinished.
Tech Romancer was really fun and had plenty of unlockables and replay value for the time. Also, clever story modes. Another extremely underrated and non mainstream Capcom game.
The characters were largely unappealing AI was unbalanced and achievement impossible to get. The game just oozes MEH hopefully the DLC that's on it's way will make the game better. San Bueno high or something like that on Xbox Indie games, that's actually a decent fighter.
I like a few of these fighters one forgotten fighter is Mace the dark age on Nintendo 64 it plays similar to Mortal Kombat cause it has Fatalities
The N64 has a few maybe not great fighters but interesting ones Fuck if I remember their names though.
