I have not yet seen a thread about the announced death of winamp on the forums. I have been a devoted Winamp user for 15 years. As silly as it sounds, I really like this little software. If you feel that way too here is a petition to save winamp. Ideally If the software can go open-source, it will live forever. http://www.change.org/en-AU/petitio...pt&utm_medium=email&utm_source=share_petition
just let it die gracefully + as long as it's distributed it will be around. there's plenty of others out there open source and all.
I was actually surprised winamp was still around. Until I loaded it onto my work computer for listening to music. Shame to see it go but lets be honest the avarage consumer hasnt been using the llama for a long time.
I was a bit WinAmp user for about 10 years but to be honest it isn't as good as it once was. I'm a foobar2000 user now. Sure, it's pretty ugly without any skins but it's sound quality where a music player should be best and that's what foobar does. Amazing sound, far better than WinAmp ever gave. Yes, it'ss sad to see WinAmp finally go but all good things must come to an end. Let it go while people still think of it as a great bit of software rather than letting it drag on becoming more and more stale.
If you don't sign the petition, winamp magically gets uninstalled from your computer, as well as the installation files from the entire internet! Won't someone think of the winamp!
The 2.x period was nice, as long as those are being mirrored somewhere, I'm good. Haven't cared about new versions since 3.x. It already felt too bloated back then, and afaict they haven't added a single featue that I'd want since then. TL;DR: WinAmp died years ago - just let it go.
I still use Winamp and it has been a mainstay of the PC's I have used since 2002 or so. Open Source or not I'll still be able to obtain it.
*rolleyes* Also: https://archive.org/details/Winamp.comPanicgrab20131120 https://archive.org/details/Download.nullsoft.com Interestingly my winamp uses less ram than Foobar2000. I use a very recent version of winamp but still use the classic version 2 style setup and skin.
I've been a loyal Winamp user since the beginning and will continue to be for a while. Best of luck on the petition. For those of you that feel it's bloated, it does allow you to select what you want installed unlike most media players. Classic skin forever!
If I was AOL I would tell winamp fans to put there money where there mouth is and do a kickstarter for the amount it would take to audit the code and remove proprietary bits. Since releasing the code as open source would probably be a big task to make sure they don't violate any of the licenses for proprietary bits that must be in the code. Would be nice to see work continue on winamp as a free program can't say I have any interest in paying for it (unless it's freeing the code).
Like Yakumo, once I discovered Foobar2000 I switched and never looked back. As a programmer, the options foobar makes available to me are unparalleled. It just does what it needs to, but is extremely expandable. While winamp was an absolute institution way back in the days of napster, I found the decision to 'renew' the brand a pretty odd one, and I guess this is the outcome...
I really like Winamp for all the VGM plugins. I have been trying the various equivalent in foobar. .HES and possibly .SID seems to have better plugins in Foobar. But I find my .RSN to play better with my winamp plugin all the while using less CPU time. For genesis music, it seems pretty much a tie. Good sound on both. Winamp pluging is slightly heavier on CPU but is very stable. ( I had foobar crash sometimes when playing genesis music ) All the while winamp is consistantly less heavy on the RAM and more stable. I also like the Winamp UI and prefer the default frequency meter better. Overall my player of choice is still winamp. Foobar might be getting better but im not ready to switch yet.
