One thing - it sucks as music player, at least last two times i tried to play FLAC file in linux and OS X with VLC i got distorted sound. With default settings. No problems with mplayer though - it's usually my default player that opens sound and video files in Midnight Commander or FAR. For GUI players it's quite simple - foobar2000 for windows and DeaDBeeF for linux. Winamp, well still have 2.xx on HDD, newer versions became much more bloated and less stable. So, goodbye Winamp, you won't be missed.
I really like clementine for linux, have not tried DeaDBeeF yet nor have i heard of it, i will look it up, not had any issues with VLC and FLAC playback. is it trying to use the wrong codec or a broken one? i'm using VLC 2.0.8 maybe you need some updates. dont use windows for any media really, but foobar i have used a while back it was acceptable.
Yeah, my ears. I have very good hearing so I can tell. In fact I'm sure most poeple could tell. foobar has a much wider dynamic range wiith a fuller sound than WinAmp. I'm not knocking WinAmp, as I said, I was a very happy user for many years until I found out about Foobar2000.
If your child hood memories are that hazy, I say it is good to see them go, considering Winamp would whip, not kick. I still use this for music, VLC for videos. Maybe I should check out foobar.
My own pretty decent ears detect no such thing. In fact, an invert wave test says that at equal volume the output of both players is exactly the same. ( I believe this was tested with both wav and mp3 ) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ir7J0tAAdIQ Considering the difference to you is however apparently very big, my guess is that you have some rogue codec/setting/plugin at works somewhere that make either your foobar sound better or make your winamp sound worse. Edit: Considering that the original inspiration for the slogan was Wesley willis, it could very well have been Kick
1. They can have different methods to prevent clipping. 2. Sending audio without windows mixer helps A LOT. Use ASIO if available. Both Foobar and Winamp has ASIO plugins. Personally I migrated too foobar. Good simplistic interface + a lot of good tools for it.
IT WONT MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE................ Such things rarely do, you could have a million signatures tomorrow that does not change a thing for Winamps owner AOL who acquired it from Nullsoft 14 years ago. Quote from an article: Shutting down Winamp makes considerable commercial sense for AOL. For a start music isn't a core business for AOL (who've settled into owning a chunk of blogosphere) and as such, they've never really focused on building an ecosystem around Winamp, and sensibly don't want to try to compete with a host of music companies who've been building up audiences and content ecosystems over the last decade. Apparently Microsoft are in talks with AOL to acquire it. Dealings like this mean much more to the Winamp owners then signatures on a petition.
I've read all that and about the Microsoft deal and know all too well what is likely to happen. But it does not matter. If all else fails Winamp will still go in a glorious blaze of llama whipping and the fans will have had a chance to speak out.
They mostly come out at night.... Mostly. if M$ get winamp rights that would make sense as they're terrible at naming their own media players / initiatives. A well known brand would probably be a good option for them.
Normal people unlike you or are I, yes It's not the sexiest player in the world and not the lightest but it does the job for most people. You have to remember they aren't trying to play FLAC and OGG and stuff lol
I've never liked VLC very much. It's good for files that other, better video players don't support. Other than that, I'd rather use Quicktime Player or MPlayerX. Unfortunately, the newest version of QuickTime Player that comes with Mavericks dropped support for third party plugins and some older video formats, which pisses me off. I don't see why they would do such a thing, considering there's no benefit to the user, other than "simplification". Anyway, Quicktime Player 7 still supports all of those files, so I can always fall back on that. And for everything else, there's MPlayerX.
Haha, no problem, it is an easy mistake. My jokingly condescending tone in the first post was just because I will always remember that slogan, as it was really funny to me when I first heard it so many years ago. We are polar opposites on the Quicktime better than VLC. Never tried MPlayerX, so I can't comment, but out of every player I have used, VLC is simple and quick to toggle features that I happen to use, and plays every file that I have thrown at it fast and reliable with no need to go searching for codecs/plugins. I have no need to try another media player, ever, as it stands. Think we can all agree that Real Player and Windows Media Player are the true bottom tier.
I needed winamp the other day for a plugin, and when I went to download it, I saw the notice about it being discontinued and the downloads being removed. I was kinda shocked, winamp was the first MP3 player I used way back in the napster days. I can't believe it's actually disappearing. End of an Era. Sure it's antiquated, but sometimes it's still so useful when you run across a plugin you need or you want to do some extremely basic format conversion with no fuss or audio editing.
