Whilst flicking through this months Retro Gamer magazine, I noticed an article on Sega's new venture: PlaySega

PlaySega is an online gaming portal (apparently [IMG]), you join up and you get to play retro games online. Sounds good. So far it's not very good.

Basically, to get the VIP content you have to be a paying member at a cost of £12.99 for 3 months. One bonus is you get a free Saturn USB pad for signing up to the VIP section but other than that, the only REAL difference is you get to play a few MD games. The same MD games that are always on the Ultimate Mega Drive compilations. The same games that everyone has already played to death. But, the site is still in Beta stage. There is a few nice elements that are being added to the site, like a level creator for Sonic. Apparently there is a lot more games coming to the site in the future too, from SMS all the way to DC, so eventually this could be a great place to be a member of.

So what do you get if you're not a VIP member? A few flash games [IMG].

One nice touch is the bonus's you get for playing the games. The site currency is sonic rings [IMG]. You get rings for scoring well in games, the more you score the more you get. These rings can then be exchanged for either customising your avatar (and it's virtual home) or entering a £50 weekly prize draw. Needless to say, my avatar is still bare and bald but I've entered the draw a few times [IMG]. They have also added achievements to the games, you get certain awards for reaching certain scores or rounds in the games, as someone who loves high score challenges, etc, I really like this idea. I'm definitely going to tackle SOR later and see if I can rack some trophies up [IMG]

I haven't decided whether I'm going to sign up for VIP yet, I'm tempted even if it's just for the free pad that'll hopefully come in a nice Sega branded delivery box [IMG]. I already own all the (proper) games that are on the site though, so I'm not sure if I want to part with my £13.

I'd be interested to hear other peoples opinions on this to help me make my mind up whether to spend my cash or not.

Probably. Quite a few of the ones on eBay are fakes already. I know mine is legit - got it soon as they were released.

The ones they offer on that site have a PlaySega logo on them, which is a pitty and so not quite te same as the 2004 released sega s usb pads. But as this site is registered by sega europe it is an original product which may be even more rare by time then the 10k produced pads.

yes, indeed, I m contemplating on asking for two pads (9 pounds for the additional one). The only problem I see is with transport, considering I live in Greece - hence I can't know the total sum I ll be paying for the whole deal including shipping, nor do I know if there's tracking offered. Can someone help out?

edit: I just said fuck it, and went ahead. I should be getting 3 of these buggers if all goes well. Total final price was 43 GBP including all applicable charges for packaging, shipping etc.

Now then, I ll just have to wait for things not to go South somehow. So you know, I didn't see an insurance or tracking option, so keep that in mind, it's probably at the buyer's risk :(

Is there something like a pull down list of countries you can choose from as in do they officially support registering from outside the UK?

Nevermind I checked, there is a default pull down menu with all the countries in the world listed, while my best guess is they won't be sending that pad to iraq, burkina faso or north korea even lol. so i'll be waiting on barcode's outcome before I continue :)

I ll have to wait for mid november for them to start shipping. Early December should be reasonable to expect the controllers, however you might want to check when the offer ends so you're not left out. If anyone is buying a controller you might as well go for broke and snatch 3, they ll make up for the price you paid for them soon.

I m surprised Yakumo has still to show up around here..

A few comments on the service itself:

It's aimed to the wide public obviously.

The emulation is far from perfect and Java doesn't help, especially on slower computers (those that can't do Blast Processing:p )

The content is inaccurate. Although I live in a PAL area, when I clicked to play Virtua Fighter 2 it clearly said GENESIS beneath it in the Logo, instead of Mega Drive. Attention to detail would be appreciated..

Other than the "free" Saturn pad, I have no idea why anyone would pay for this crap.

Oh, I'm here alright  I have no interest in this service since I own all the Sega Stuff I want to play apart from Arcade boards. The pads are interesting but do they actually feel like a real Saturn pad or just look like it? My black one feels perfect so I know it's legit. Cam fully boxed with all the official packing, labels and so on. If these controllers are official then it may be worth signing up just for the controller like many other people are doing.

They sound to be official enough actually. They are, after all, official SEGA licensees from the looks of it. The word SEGA should guarantee their quality else there'd be quite the customer backlash from such a long-standing fanbase.

Their price is even better than the crappy Chinese ones found TODAY on ebay.

I m not really digging the colour scheme though tbh. That said, it certainly looks... Greek [IMG]

I'm sure they're afraid of pissing off the 10 people who still like Sega, that is if the Nights and Golden Axe sequels, Sega Superstars Tennis, Sonic 2006, Sonic Unleashed and Sonic and the Black Knight hadn't already made them hate Sega.

    good point

but a bad controller is a bad controller. A limited edition controller is a limited edition controller nevertheless. I don't see the harm in obtaining them either way :110:
