I bought PS1 scph-9002 model while ago. it has been modded with stealth modchip previously done since the modding was standard in the 90's and 00's. I have backup copies of Spyro 3, Dino Crisis 1, and Poprogue. Spyro 3 seems bypassed modchip check while the others have detected a modchip. It has strange looking 6 wire modchip called it self stealth chip 168 that has glob of epoxy when I disassembled a unit, frequently used in PS1 consoles where I live. Should I take it to somebody else with knowledge of soldering or replace the modchip?
Possibly, but it could be simply that it's using a later version of the protection code. SCEE thought the whole modchip detection thing was a bad idea (since it prevented people from playing original games) and a lot of later games will disable the anti-mod code on a PAL console. If you want to check stealth modchip code always do it on a NTSC:U/C console.
To be clear, Spyro 3 was clean copy not patched by a group, so the shop owner didn't apply a patch before burning to CD-R. He is aware of anti-modchip checks, I have tried Strider 2 one of the anti-modchip protection games, strangely it dont give me a halt screen that says your console may have been modified.
Dino Crisis NTSC region is the best game to test anti-modchip. And here you have a long discussion about this problem if you care to read: https://assemblergames.com/threads/indentify-playstation-modchip-onechip-maybe.64155/ Again I want to thank rama, master991 and Bad_Ad84 for listening me and offer support; they are very knowledgeable.
