As I'm not in Japan at the moment, I can't do this myself.

I probably want to buy another Playstation 3 60GB machine (nothing wrong with mine, just want to buy one as a present for someone) and was wondering if anyone could tell me if they are passing or in any game shops what the new / second hand price for these machines are at the moment...

I see that Amazon.jp has them listed for a shade under 100,000Yen and a few shopping sites I use have them listed for around 80,000+Yen. So has the 60GB machine become ultra collectable?

When me and Phinn went on a tour to find mine, we didn't see any around Akihabara, we were looking for 20GB and 60GB but didn't see any. I ended up buying a 40GB as thats all they had.

Sorry Barcode, you aren't female, cute or Japanese. :p

Cez : Yes I was searching Kakaku (brilliant website, saved a lot of money buying electrical goods) and 80,000 does seem expensive. Might have to check out YA.

Tachikoma : I guessed that Akihabara would be sold out of them, but I hold out for other places around Japan. :) After seeing a 40gb model I decided to pass as the Playstation 2 compatability and SACD facilities are important and it could be me but the 40gb one does feel cheap compared to the 60gb one..

Yes, the extra USB ports are missed when you have the EoJ camera, charger lead and then you need to plug in a pendrive or something. It's a pain in the arse unplugging things so I plugged in a hub, which looks crap.

What's retail on the PS3 for the different versions, and are there still version with PS2 compatibility? Haven't been following but seeing as I will be heading towards Japan for a longer time in the near future, I might be tempted to pick one up :) .

I promise, i ll change!!! (much to the dismay of Unorthodox :p )

only the 20 and 60 GB models are worth getting if you're into PS2 100% compatibility.

Hmm, Amazon lists the 40GB for ~40.000 yen which isn't too bad, just above 200 euro's. However, that version doesn't have the PS2 chip which I would need tbh. And the 20GB which does have that, doesn't have WiFi >_> . Plus, Amazon lists it for 51.000 yen, which seems like a tad high? What a dilemma. Might be better of just picking up a cheap PS2 (15000 yen or so?).

    100% ?

That's the going rate (or ballpark anyway). People apparently don't want to store a slim PS2 somewhere to play their PS2 games.

Indeed, it's probably more like 99% with a few games that don't work on the PS3 or have issues having issues on a slimline PS2... Even PS1 games have issues on the PS3, the Japanese version of Parappa the Rapper doesn't work, or it tries to but ends up looking like Parappa the Rapper on Speed.

With the latest firmware, can you play 240p games unfiltered/unsmoothed/uncocked up? I bought a 60GB for someone a few months after launch. Popped in ESPGaluda: interlaced and filtered -- instant fail. I would've punched any PS3 dev I came across. I've never gotten a straight answer on whether than malarkey was addressed.

I googled and found this (which I would've seen had I read a bit at Shmups more today):
    http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?p=366007#366007

So yeah, looks bleak for sprite whores. While it's a mere fraction of the PS2 library, it's like 80% of my PS2 library.

I find the quality of PS2 games on a PS3 with an RGB or VGA cable gives a sharp picture via a CRT TV.

no not really any ps3 games i wanna play at the moment.

t's the only version available to us in Europe, the 40GB with the two usb ports and no fucking flash card readers.

no PS2 compatibility, and no SACD compatibility.

i mainly want one as a media center in front of the tele more than anything else, although it is quite crippled compared to other models.

That said, this is sort of a bargain. I have a gift-card for 200 euros so it will only cost me 260 more to make the purchase.

    Worth it or not? argue!
