The idea of spending £366 on a console puts me off. I was also thinking of using one as a media center but might as well buy a £130 apple tv and hack it.

Ironically the picture of the PS3 on the Playstation 3 UK hardware page is the old model as you can see the other 2 USB slots and more importantly the SACD logo is still visible... :)

I would go and get a 60gb model if you can find one.

It's use as a media centre is limited. I find it can't play the vast majority of DivX video's. I usually end up converting them as the compatibility is crap. However, ripping DVD's with Handbrake to PS3 format looks better that running the DVD upscaled through my 360.

    the stupid thing is this:

it does not support ps2 games yet you CAN create PS2 virtual memory cards!!

Wow, thanks for rubbing it in SONY!

    Well I still rather pay 400 quid for a Japanese PS2 60gb unit. ;)

The PS2 virtual cards can be useful, I mean you can back up all your PS2 memory cards and have them safe. Why not write to Sony and ask them why the people who did the customer surverys asked a bunch of brain dead chavs who probably will only steal a PS3 put PS2 compatability well down the list of features, behind the hardly used six axis feature...

i think the memory card part is still there to back up PS1 games to use with the PS1 game downloads and because they are going to do PS2 game downloads in the future in the same was as XBOX Original downloads on XBLA.

On the subject of PS3, if I'm using an American model PS3 with a Japanese internet connection, do I connect to the Japanese PSN or the American one? What about online games?

Whatever your profile is set up for. I use a Japanese PS3 with a UK PSN account and access the UK store. However, the games are programmed to contact their respective countries servers. I have Japanese and PAL copies of Everybody's Golf and they connect to their country's servers.
