Do you think that xbox 360 selling early will cut ps3 sales?

People are aching for a new system, and ps3 is almost TEN MONTHS from now.

360 will have FIVE months of no competition selling time.

The PSP hasn't created a buzz to steal the 360's spotlight.
The revolution is not even considered competition anymore to anyone.
    (might be a smart ploy)

Even if they cut ps2 to $99, I don't think it will steal 360 sales.

How bad will the damage be?

Is there really any drive to get xbox on launch? What're the launch titles? I for one will be holding out until PS3 goes on sale. As far as I can see there's almost no reason to get an xbox.

Well in the usa there is a big drive for sports games. It has amazing footage, which has stirred a lot of interest.

There will also be enhanced halo2 or halo 3, depending on who you believe.

I think, the way that microsoft seem to be pumping the 360, and that sony dont seem to be for the ps3, that the 360'll take over this gen.
I think that people will not hold on till the PS3 - They'll see the prettyness of 360, and the "ooooooohhhh" Factor will take over...

ok...Now that we've all talked about what the pop/mainstream gaming effects may be, how about premonitions our level of interest? Obviously most/many people here will be getting all three systems anyways...But if you could only choose one which one?

Question is a bit premature still, but I would still have to go with the PS3...Oops someone calling me have to check back later ; )

Doesn't bother me when or in what order the systems come out; I still plan on getting all three at release. It's still cheaper than crack (though the cost gap seems to be closing)...

Yeah, I'm surprised that people who call themselves gamers here are talking about buying systems just for the aesthetics or not. Why the aesthetics matter that much is beyond me, but personally the XBox and PS3 have two main things that will be the basis for getting one or the other:

    (1) Who has the better graphics for mainstream public

    (2) Who will have the bigger and more varied library of games...

Now there is the "who will have the more popular characters as well," but for most people here, we don't buy for the image, but as #2, variety and size. And as well all know, whether we enjoy the system, company, or not is that the PS series still has the largest base of games--and this era of PS3 seems no different. My second choice would definitely be the XBox 360 though, whether is be the lack of information or new ideas at the moment, the Revolution seems to have nothing especially new going for it right now when stacked against the 360. Game emulation is fun, but my PC, modded XBox and PS2, and soon-to-be emulating PSP already do all of those. A fourth or fifth item that does the same thing is nothing new--even if it is finally official and support officially on a console...Big deal (sorry for being blunt).

THe only reason I bought an Xbox on launch date was b/c it had Jet Set Radio Future. I don't think Microsoft will have anything that appeals to me. I only play one sports game (Virtua Striker) and not even that much at that. If DOA4 (miraculously) has an engine somewhere up to par with Virtua Fighter, I'd think about it. Something tells me there will be the same old engine with more jiggling. PS2 launch titles sucked ass too though, so who knows. I may not buy anything at launch.

    Premonition?

Sony will win. They have all of the licenses locked up, the Japanese developers locked up, and the cool factor.

Microsoft is trying to make something fly that has no Japanese developer support.

It's like xbox, they'll throw a ton of cash at some Japanese developers and then a few months later when the contract runs out they will be back on ps3.

Meanwhile nintendo will have a cheap system that will sell very well as a "toy"
and make more money than both of them combined.

It'll be interesting to see what happens when xbox 360 makes no money, as xbox did. It'll be a billion dollar hardware hole that eventually microsoft won't be able to dig it's way out of.

If PS3 fails, then it's lights out for sony as a company, their consumer products sell terribly, they have no cool factor in Japan anymore, they lost the mp3 player market, have no idea that they should be making mp3 game camera phones.

Sony has more at stake than Microsoft

    1. Blu ray, and the movie market it can possibly dominate and the $$ per disc made royalty.

    2. Sony has more content to deliver free to the home. Microsoft has to license or get agreements. Sony can make spiderman a free videostream and it costs them ZERO.

    3. Profits from the interactive division PROP up the company. Without them, or success, sony is dead, and I mean dead. Their quality has already suffered, how long until the sony name brand tarnishes?

Assembler why only 2 choices, that's not so good of a poll. It might do some damage but not that much. Playstation is a mainstream system, and I think most people will wait for PS3.

I was telling some kids in one of my classes about the whole 360 coming out in 2 versions and they werent really following me. It pissed me off when they said thats stupid because they really didnt get what I was trying to explain. Plus they all kinda agreed with the "leader" figure when he said it was dumb. Damn followers.

In america, the xbox360 has a VERY good chance of taking over Sony.

The us is the market that has the money, will this be the system to make the japanese developers take notice?

I'll get whichever console has the games I want to play, damn the variety, library, and graphics. I'll buy it at launch if there is a launch title I want, and if the future holds any games I want to play.

I got the Xbox for JSRF, and DOA3 mainly. Halo was a happy surprise for sure. DOA3 was a rehash of 2. For the future outlook of the system, I wanted Shin Megami Tensei 9.

I got a PS2 for FFX. It was a disappointing. Though it did have Shin Megami Tensei III on the horizon, at that time.

For a system purchase there should be one game or a set of games that should be able to justify the purchase for the buyer. Right now I don't see that much with any of these next-gen systems.

It seems that the specs have done a complete reverse with the PS3 being as big as the Xbox 1 and powerful and the Xbox360 being small and decent. Though, unlike before I think people will wait for the PS3 since they know exists and they know it's more powerful then the 360.

At this point if I were Microsoft, I'd be upping those specs I showed off, if possible. Would be nice if they added another core or two into that processor and some more ram perhaps at a higher clock.

Then again if the PS3 sells for like 400 or 500 usd, I think that may kill it. Especially if the 360 can maintain the standard price point of 300 usd or vice-versa.

No. While Japan is not the most money, it is a massive market. Typical American view of the world has gone into the games world. ("There's only us"). Japan has half the people of the US, and as many know, a very crappy birth rate. Yet, Japan still pumps out shitloads of games, and the people buy them world wide. The Japanese developers are in the unique position to have a big seller at home, and abroad (Final Fantasy, Zelda, and Mario, MSG, Biohazard) all sell extremely well in all three markets. There are only a handful of western published games that sell well in Japan. The best one I think is one of the GTA's hitting 400,000 units. This is hardly the norm though.

The Japanese developers will take notice to the machine that allows them to continue pumping out games in both countries... not just the US and not just Japan (Europe as usual will be a bonus). This is very apparent from this gen. If we're unfortunate enough to have PS3 take a clear lead in Japan, and Microsoft a clear lead in the US, we might see some very strange results.

Exact same here. And only bought 3-4 games after that. :/

1080p is what made me look more closely at the ps3. I might wait, but then again project PGR3 looks amazing. So for me it is price point, if sony put it over 400 -500 bucks then i am going for the Nintendo or xbox 360.

Nintendo can probably come in very low, 200 usd. If the PS3 is overpriced and the 360 hits the average new console price then I might go for a combination of the 360 and Revolution. Though it's to early to really say much of anything, since I can't see a good list of games that will be released beyond the launch window.

1080p is interesting, but I don't have a TV for it, so it's not an option. By the time I get around to getting a TV with 1080p, one or two more console generations will have past. What got me was those high quality rolling demos for the PS3. Though I have to wonder how much of that is really pre-rendered (this is what we think the system can do).
