Playstation yes but I'm still confused

I stumbled across these online and have no idea what they're for. I'm guessing they are most likely a dev tool but I don't know. Anyone know?

 

Those are just ASCII PAD V and ASCII ENHANCED PAD third party controllers. Those switches are just for turbo modes.

Personally, ASCII makes great controllers, but they do go overboard often.

 

Any idea why they are Playstation branded? Thats what lead me to think it was a Sony device and then therefore a dev tool. Did ASCII simply buy the rights?

I personally have the controller pictured on the left and it's absolutely amazing. Its shape seems unnatural and odd but it's extremely comfortable. It fits my hand as comfortably as the Xbox controller and mine are very small. It's glaringly unusual and alien, and as unlikely as it may be, it feels great to hold. It's my favorite controller from my collection of hardware. It's a high quality product, no doubt.

 

I really will have to pick one up, not only as an object that seems interesting but to also put your claims to the test. Saying that my hands have been compared to a bunch of bananas in the past so who knows how I'd get on with it. Still, something I'd like to add!

 

It was common practice to license rights for periphereals. There's an ascii pad for the dreamcast with a dreamcast logo, for example.

 

I had no idea, seems I got into console gaming rather late on, or not into it enough to look for these strange devices. I will keep my eye open for these as I skim over the interwebs, certainly things that should be in a good collection regardless of how great or crap they are.

 

The ascii dreamcast fighter pad (basically a saturn pad with vibration for dc) is a classic. Unlike those two turbo pads for psx this one is greatly appreciated by most.
They made one like that for ps2 also.
A thing ascii is known for is very good build quality.

 

Ahh they are for the PSX, I need to ask, do you mean the PSX only released in Japan or the original Playstaion. If they are for the PSX I'd imagine they are gonna be rare and expensive? Either way I wanna own some and I've kinda committed to that in my head now.

 

early on, sony internally refered to the ps1 as "psx". so it's as official as it gets. it's silly to call the much later released ps2 dvr simply "psx". ps2 psx is more appropriate. and being nothing more than a repackaged ps2 it doesn't have any exclusive perphireals.
i'm talking about your picture, i specifically mentioned "turbo".

 

If nothing else Sony and Nintendo should have worked together as intended, they seem to be on the same page when it comes to naming schemes. Microsoft were late to the party with there 1st console, the Xbox one. Why can't these people just stick to naming consoles in numeric order. Anyway... thank you for the info! AFAIK, it was only called the "PSX" in the US. Not to mention the flipped select button (CROSS -> OK) was by SCEA.

It has a white DualShock 2 and a special remote controller for itself. The HDD unit was also built in and it has the XMB.

 

The X button has nothing to do with it. It was called psx in japan even while in development with nintendo.
