About 3 years ago Sega Japan found an old stock of the Pearl Blue Dreamcasts. You had to send them an email as an "entry form" and they'd randomly pick winners. If you won you got to buy the system for $99. I found out about it just after the contest had ended. I ended buying a couple on Yahoo for much more than $99, but they were still a good price since a lot of people were reselling them.

They were also selling brand new R7 Black Dreamcasts for $99. No one was buying...

About 2 years ago on the Sony US page they still had the European Color Collection Consoles. They were limited to 666 and are very hard to get in Japan. I guess no one knew about them in the US. The resale prices were almost the same so I passed on buying one...too bad. They were $249 new, I think...

Anyway, that just crossed my mind when reading this thread.

For my story, I picked up a PAC-S1 MegaDrive LaserActive aqccessory on Yahoo. The picture just had the unit with nothing else and a bare minimum description. I get the thing in the mail and it's a brand new unit with everything inluded. I went back to the auction and took a closer look at the picture and realized that he must have been using some stock photo from somewhere. The price was cheap since everyone assumed they were bidding on just the unit and no extras... I'm reselling it now, eBay 300011559792. Got lucky. ;)

Last week I bought a Microsoft Xbox Debug unit in the UK for £20.00 (Roughly $30). It is almost fully functional (it really does need a new DVDrom). It also turns out to be quite an interesting unit (see thread: http://www.gamerhistory.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=339) my unit is the second one discussed in the thread.

I'm also forever trawling through car boot sales, flea markets & second-hand shops. Through the years I have had some amazing finds and yes, a few FREE items. Thanks to eBay it's becoming harder to find them in the usual places, but then again I've had one or two major bargains on eBay too!

Far too many to list actually, but the Debug is the latest and possibly most exciting one for me - ever!

Well, I'm lucky to say I have had a TON of awesome deals. Looking back I have been graciously blessed with mind-blowingly awesome deals. Steals. Not that I stole games, mind you. [IMG]

Radiant Silvergun (albeit disc only) for $65. Hey, that's an awesome deal in my book. Complete copy = 150. I'll save 85 bucks any day if it meant I had to forego the back insert and manual! Wouldn't you? (non-collectors that is)

Since I was a major Saturn buff from 2001-2005, the majority of my steals came with this system. In 2002 a guy in Japan was starting an upstart Saturn website. He and I became good email buddies, and he liked my style of reviewing games. He booked me and in return sent me a load of free Saturn imports. I'm not talking no stinkin' cheapo Virtua Fighter. I still remember the 1st package: OutRun, Puyo Puyo Sun and Dead or Alive... all free.

July 2, 2002. The night my cousins came to visit me after not seeing each other for 8 (!) years... it was a beautiful day indeed.

Other goodies he sent me for free later in 2002:

    X-Men vs. SF
    Space Harrier
    Magical Drop 3
    Samurai Shodown III
    Vampire Savior
    BATTLE GAREGGA!!!!! ($80 value minimum)

and many more, all complete and mint. Unbelievable. No catch. He sent me these games all for free in exchange for my reviews, shipping out 3-5 out at a time.

Another guy I met a long time ago, apparently he loved me in a similar vain, as he sent me free games on 4 or 5 separate occasions. US Christmas NiGHTS (worth $25 at the time), Contra Legacy of War (it sucks but was semi-rare), 3D Saturn pad, Duke Nukem 3D, etc. and in his final shipment (2004) he sent me the likes of Shining the Holy Ark, Shining Force III, Iron Storm and Dragon Force, all complete and mint. Holy crap. They were doubles and I sold or traded them off for major killings.

Looking back, I probably received over $1,000 value of games, for NOTHING. For free. Just because I happened to bump into a bunch of dudes who really appreciated the PASSION that I bought to the Saturn scene/community during the early 2000's. Incredible huh? From 2001-2005 I had like 7 or 8 different random "internet buddies" sending me FREE Saturn goodies. Now that whole experience is one I look back fondly on as a Saturn gamer. I'm not in the Saturn scene any more, as I simply burned out and the "mileage ran out," so to speak. Nonetheless, today I still keep the system and have 185 games for it.

I started my SNES journey in January 2006, and already have had some excellent deals. I bought Super Metroid on another site... I offered $8 shipped but he insisted on $7 shipped. Why, who cares, lol. Anyway, he didn't send it til about 3 weeks later, and never replied to my PM's so he stressed me out. However, when the package finally came, he threw in Mario All-Stars for his troubles.

Mario All-Stars was a double. I auctioned it off and got $15 from it.

So essentially, I got Super Metroid for free AND a couple bucks!

Recently, because me and this guy dealt before and I guess he liked me, offered a free copy of Metal Warriors. I was so excited. Free! A week later, I was at the flea market and found a copy! So I sold the double off for $36. I got the flea market copy by trading in $2 and a copy of Fatal Fury SNES. Are you kidding me?!

At 1 point, I owned as many as 3 Aero Fighter copies! One which I traded in for 4 lousy fighting game-related movie VHSes (SF The Anime, Samurai Shodown, Toshinden and Mortal Kombat) I *couldn't* move this junk on the internet for $15 shipped! The vendor gladly took it for Aero Fighters.

Not long ago, my bud sent me Megaman Soccer ($20-$25) and EVO ($50+) for free.

Did I also mention, in 2003, I won a Dreamcast system for free via a message board contest, where I had a fellow random stranger board member chat with me and helped me find the clues on different websites? The DC came with the essentials including Shenmue, Evolution and Grandia II. Crazy huh?

Well I've rambled on long enough. Thanks for being grounds to making an early Monday morning a nice fond trip down memory lane, where the road has been paved with great deals and steals. [IMG] [IMG]

Standard UK Xbox for FREE! Moved into a new home, clearing out the attic as the previous owners hadn't done a good job - I discovered a plastic tub with a fully working Xbox and Mission Impossible game. Not world shattering, but I love free stuff!

It also means I can retire my limited edition unit and keep it for a rainy day.

Another reason never to sell your stuff to GameStop. $0.03 for everything is just an insult!

yeah since about 99 GameStop/Babbages/EB Games etc have always had this whole "we give you peanuts and sell it back as gold" approach to how they buy games.
