I've been debating whether I should post this or not, but I think it should be fine. The agreement with Apple for the Yosemite beta says that I can't share any information that they haven't already publicly announced/demoed. I don't think there's anything in this screenshot that Apple hasn't already announced. Enjoy. I took this picture from an airplane in Washington.
I've only had an issue once with apple re: confidentiality. Years ago I emailed them about iOS developer royalties asking if they were ever going to consider consolidating payments from all countries rather than having to reach the then $60 threshold per region before they paid out. They emailed me back to tell me that they were planning on doing it in a month or two (this was way back in 2010). In my excitement I leaked the info on the iPhoneDevSDK boards not really thinking much of it. Within one hour I got an email from Apple saying they'd seen my breach of NDA and threatened legal action unless I removed all mentions I'd made across the web about this. What was scary was that none of my forum info could have led me back to my developer account!! These days I'm a bit more cautious and will only talk about the stuff that has already leaked to the mainstream rumours sites, but to be honest things are different now, I'd say at least 50% of developer accounts are probably never even used for dev purposes and purely for Beta's etc. For £60 a year it's not a huge amount for people to pay if they want to be ahead of the curve. Once upon a time it was a relatively close knit community and I was good friends with a large proportion of the UK developer community and was quite well known myself, someone once said that I'd inspired them to become a full time iOS dev and quit their job lol. Now it's anybodies game.
Yeah, I'm not too worried about the above image, as I'm fairly certain Apple has already showed every aspect of the UI in that image. There was one element I was unsure about, so I obscured it. Actually, the version I have isn't the developer preview - it's the public beta. I'm on the public beta 3 now. I'm liking it so far, though it does have some issues, which I won't go into here. Before I started using it, I was worried that Apple might be going too far with the iOS 7 look, but now that I've used it, I think they've struck a really good balance between that look and the older OS X look. It still feels like OS X. By the way, if Apple sees this and wants me to remove any of it, I'd be happy to do so.
The current developer preview is way more stable than the public beta (which I installed by mistake after I set up a striped SSD RAID). The only bug I've found so far is with preview which has some drawing issues and occasionally sticks open and won't even force quit which requires a hard restart which always hurts. It's a great release even if the community is divided over the UI. Mavericks on my gf's Macbook feels horribly antiquated already.
Is it stable and does it make sense to upgrade yet if I have to use my Mac every day for work (e.g. can't afford incompatibility)?
The only way to get Yosemite right now is if you're either in the public beta, or if you're part of the developer program. Of course there are other (less legitimate) ways to get it. I would just wait for the final public release. I don't think Apple has announced a release date, but I'm guessing it'll be before the end of 2014. Just like Mavericks, it will be free to Mac users. I would definitely recommend updating once the final version comes out. As far as I can tell, they haven't removed any functionality, and of course they've updated the UI and added some new features. Keep in mind that some older Macs don't support Yosemite. If your machine can run Mavericks, it can run Yosemite. If you use your Mac for work, I wouldn't recommend installing Yosemite right now. It's running pretty well on my machine, but it's still in a beta stage - so if you're using your machine for work, it'd probably be best to wait for the final release.
I'm signed up for the Beta program (as of right now) and it seems that I *could* download it, but I'm not sure if that's a good idea in case there are any bugs. I am very dependent on Microsoft Office and Adobe for schoolwork, especially right now where projects picked up pace. My Mac should be able to run it though - Early 2011 MBP with 8gb RAM and running an SSD. Mavericks works like a charm at least.
Lol, think you should be able to run it plenty fine, it's blazing fast on my 2.4 C2D! Anyhow the beta's are pretty stable, I rely on mine for work every day and it never lets me down. Actually I've been running beta's since Lion and can't say I've ever had any work ending bugs appear. That said I'm not saying you should definitely go ahead and install it, everyone's experience can be different. It's due for public release on the 16th of October I think anyway.
the final version is already available, it's the Golden Master, basically it's the final version byte to byte but available for developers (of course you can get pretty easily without being one) anyway here's my desktop, pretty neat:
Is this your desktop image? Usually in this thread, we post a screenshot of the desktop, so you can see things like the dock/taskbar/menu bar and desktop icons, etc.
As you've no doubt discovered it wasn't a final version, it was a GM candidate. There have been 3 other candidate releases since then...just a warning before someone runs off and installs it after reading this and then fucks up their machine. It's getting close though, very latest release is smooth as silk.
