I've uploaded a "gameplay only" video of Dream: Land of Giants for SNES for those interested. It's stunning what Rare achieved on SNES:
That is pretty impressive for a SFC. Obviously there's no real gamplay in there due to the early nature of the video but still impressive.
Wow, really cool! Glad to see that this is what they were getting at with the Twitter thing. I really hope they keep doing these, It's all very interesting.
seeing that rare revealed was awesome Dream looked like a really fun game. i love how these guys openly talked about it showed footage would love to play it one day
That was a great video! These gameplay videos look so clean that they look like they were captured yesterday. This sorta seems to suggest that all of these builds are neatly archived somewhere at the present day Rare. We may not have them, but at least they aren't truly "lost".
I wouldn't doubt that some of the footage was recently captured. I am still hoping for a playable copy someday.
Shame they never got finish looked pretty insane for a snes title. Really cool seeing banjo evolve through development. Guess they kept all those betas after all.
Found the interim not-quite-3D stuff really interesting, and not just because it was basically unknown until now. Ha! That Banjo test level. Nice to see it in its complete form finally ;*)
Whoa, If this game came out, It'd knock Donkey Kong Country off the map It's really amazing that rare could do such amazing and unexpected things with the SNES.
Never really followed this, back in the day or more recently. That does look very impressive and makes me wonder what a finished product would have been like. Also makes me wonder just how far old consoles can be pushed, beyond what we saw during their lifetime. For example, my understanding is Pier Solar upped the onscreen colour count with some trickery, as well as the enhanced CD and other effects not seen on the MD. Amazingly interesting regardless.
I gotta say the wait was worth it. I love it. Like a mix of DKC2, Mario RPG, and Secret of Mana all rolled into one. I've always preferred the look of the not quite 3D SGI pre rendered SNES games to the N64 games that came right after and this is a great example of it. If that cart ever makes it out into the wild I cringe to think of the insane price it will fetch.
The graphics are interesting and really capture the feel of the production art that had been released over time. Shame it never really made it as far as gameplay; scripts and plot summaries would be interesting to read through though. The way they're using the dog, and the compunction to add various additional abilities on it, is somewhat reminiscent of Secret of Evermore. To be completely fair it would have suffered the same fate if released on SNES. Pre-rendered graphics are a sneaky little illusion. It's higher-quality "3D" than cheap retail machines can produce and fits into the comfortable model of 2D game design. Even the GB can use pre-rendered sprites. It's a bit of a shame that the majority of 2D N64 titles were never released outside Japan.
Wow, they finally did it! They finally put up gameplay footage for Dream! This is too cool! Merry Christmas to me, and everyone else on AssemblerGames!
They seem to be revealing a lot of stuff on their YouTube channel. They showed an earlie version of conked twelve tales with quite a bit of unseen footage. It's obvious it's running on an emulator. Really surprised they kept all these betas after Microsoft acquisition (animator says in video footage of twelve tales was from early version dug off of vaults). Hopefully killer instinct 2 on snes will be shown.
Definitely looks like recently captured footage, rather than archive footage from some degrading vhs tape.
