I would like to take this moment to also say this. Dont hack to steal builds. I get that the best content is in this way but at least try to get it fair and square. I truly do wish the best of luck to anyone else who gets in legal trouble, because chances are they will not get as lucky as I did.
Sounds brutal, id be twitching like a rabbits nose. Glad it ended up best case scenario. And the guy who you got it from...scot free?
Holy shit dude. Glad it ended up not as bad as it could have. I do appreciate what you do for our community, as with everyone that contributes. It sucks to hear this sort of thing happen to someone who's been so helpful for the preservation cause.. be careful out there, everyone!
No but I have no word on what his position is. I have not spoken to him since late May. I have no contact with him, and I wish to keep it that way.
Thank you for sharing the story PixelButts. Some people here seem to think they can get away with all sorts. This should be proof enough. While it sucks it's going to cost you so much to repair this mess. I'm just glad they didn't jail you or anything. Also glad you'll be remaining a part of AssemblerGames. When we spoke about this I was worried they'd force you to stay away.
Glad that it seems to have worked out better than it could have. While the legal risks are there for all manner of development material, this shows that new and yet-to-be-released material is clearly playing with fire, perhaps crossing the line from preservation into piracy and assumptions/accusations of espionage/sabotage. I guess what is more alarming to me about your case is that it was apparently linked to posting videos and not to actually hosting the data.
Glad to hear that you are ok PB. Also glad to hear that it's a best case scenario and not worst case. This is a prime example of how dangerous this stuff is for those who are considering it. I thought about helping the prototype community but stuff like this tends to scare me off.
Sorry to hear about what you have been through. I've always known that there is a risk of legal action, when we're circumventing copy-protection and sharing their development (i.e. "confidential") stuff online. But perhaps, you're the only person who I have ever known of to come forward to talk about his experience. Thank you for sharing, even if it is not easy to.
I wanted to make light of this opportunity because nobody ever hears this side. Many people hear the side of what was done from third parties, never the one involved. For instance, we have the story of SuperDAE, He himself gave his side at some point but only after news outlets filled everyone in. Mind you, I am a paranoid person, and after this it has only worsened my state. I can tolerate it, but it's clear I am overly quick to react to things now to an unhealthy degree (and not going outside much didn't help). Regardless, we always say how ones should be careful with handling this stuff, both new and old (mainly new) because of the dangers of companies taking action. This happens to be such a case, and needed to share that the danger is as real as it's said to be. I'm also holding my comments about the game itself and the potential reasons for why this happened outside of it being stolen, but that's because I am in no place to speak my side of that. One day, but not today
Anything recent is a major gamble, but at the same time it shouldn't come at any surprise. Especially if the company is still standing today.
Fair enough. Whether accident, theft, disgruntled employee, the original source is but one piece of the puzzle. Leaking discoveries to the public has its own share of worms.
Also hacking to get the data doesn't help lol The real reason why DaE was pursuited was that he stole the programs to train pilots in the air force. The Xbox data he stole only put the spotlight on him.
I thought it was because he/people he helped managed to gain access to a Microsoft building, walked right in, and physically stole kits.
From what I gathered he managed to get they sent out to various addresses. It was a group setups, wasn't just him. His mum is now in the shit too.
I am glad you shared this story with us @PixelButts, and that you have learned lessons from it (most of us will probably learn the same lessons by reading your story). I knew you had some court troubles but I didn't knew it was this serious. Preserving all these DATAs will probably be seen as a good thing in a late futur, as it will be seen as preserving a part of history. But for the moment, we should be aware that sharing these DATAs as long as owning them can cause us many troubles. This forum is definetly not a hacking or piracy forum, so we should be very very carefull of what we do here. I am glad this ended pretty good for your PixelButts.
Bit over the top, you never stole the beta you was given it by a user ... watch what you upload on youtube they do check it , i found out the hard way..
just curious, were you ratted out for having it, or did the build phone home? I've seen a few more modern protos that had functions within to phone home when ran
