I've also heard about that, but it still scares me. Thanks for sharing and all the best for the future to you and your family.
Correct but having a dedicated machine for such a purpose is more of a hassle than it needs to be. On top of this not all win10 builds have this aspect of telemetry either so some will have it some won't.
Regardless, you shouldn't touch current gen unreleased, even with a 12' pole. Running them in a sandbox is like a 4' pole.
Dang, it's cause of this drx took down all the capcom protos on hidden palace wiki. I wish you hadn't shared this story.
You're sure about that? Maybe @drx simply received a polite letter? Normally, old stuff isn't near as risky as what this thread is about, otherwise @Borman would have stopped collecting a long time ago...
Collecting isn't really going to get you in a whole lot of trouble, assuming things have been acquired legally and not through theft, as this one has. Can be hard to prove though, which is always a concern. Sharing, including having a repository like drx does, is always a different risk, way different than even the videos that I do, which, again, should be legal in most cases. There's a reason that I don't really release things now. I always say this: When the law request comes knocking, regardless of if you're guilty or not, you're going to have to defend yourself against what is likely a multi-million dollar company at the least. Take the risks that you think are worth it, but don't be surprised when others aren't willing to do the same, because ultimately you will be on your own.
I disable my internet and fire up wire shark to see if anything suspicious is going on if playing any protos
That doesnt help as the moment it touches internet telemetry will kick in. The fact it's Win10 required is part of the issue. There's methods to "cleanse" Win10 per se but it doesn't get everything, so chances are you will never ever be allowed to take that machine online if you have something.
Some do seem to have the ROMs removed along with instructions to not upload them, yes, but others still have the download links up.
I'd like to say if you have any questions, by all means PM me or post them here. I'm not one to avoid conversation if one is curious
You should not have posted any of this. If you are found in violation of your probation you will be in ass pound prison for the full probated sentence. You will also be a lifelong felon. 499(c) Theft of trade secrets is so vague that you could violate probation for practically anything, like having mp3 files or a nes rom on your phone. If I were you, I WOULD NOT OWN A GAME SYSTEM OR COMPUTER until probation is over. I would avoid using the internet, and not even have a smart phone. Do you understand that you risk spending 1095 days in a real life prison cell over video games? Clearly you don't and I will hopefully wake you up to the life changing danger you have hanging over your head. Ways You Can Violate Your Probation in California Fail any drug test, work or court ordered Being in possession of contraband (Do you own any old systems with a mod chip?) Any violation of the law other than a traffic infraction. If you violate any law it may revoke your probation. If a woman calls the cops on you, you get arrested at a party, get drunk and get in a fight. Prison. No parole. You are foolish for posting this, utterly foolish. You made so many bad decisions including pleading to a felony. You continue to make bad decisions by posting this here. You have ruined your prospects for ever holding a government job, owning a firearm, working around children, or getting a job involving finance. Felons face huge hurdles in getting a job. Private background checks are under no obligation to correct the felony arrest to a misdemeanor. In fact, you will probably be listed as a felon for the rest of your life, no matter what the court reclassifies you under (wobble). Stop posting here, delete all your accounts, sell your consoles and computers until the probation is OVER. Go to school, and cut all ties to beta scene. If someone emails you an ISO out of spite and reports you, you will be in PRISON for the probated sentence. You are walking on a paper thin sheet above lava and have no clue.
Not to be an ass, you've had it rough already, but this very much is a "no f*king shit" kind of deal. There is no reason you should have accepted that stuff in the first place. It's one thing to have stuff from games long past and out of the market but something new to the point of it being before it even hits the market is asking for trouble. Anyways I am with assembler on this, I think it's time to step away from assembler and any scene while you're going through probation. I hope this is a lesson to others that you don't mess around with this stuff.
There have been a number instances since I initially posted this where I have turned away anyone that wanted to send me something, no matter how close they are even if its my own stuff. I am making an effort to prevent it getting any worse than it already is. I'm listening to what others have said, and changing what I have to accordingly whether it be who I speak to what services I use and whatever else that could be a problem. Deleting accounts I don't see a reason to do, but I will if I truly need to on my own accord. Replying to this isn't great either, but I can promise you I won't be screwing around with this.
