Yay, starting this week some PS2 games will be hitting PSN. The reason I say sort of is oddly the playstation blog does not refer to them as PS2, just refers to them as Classics. So not sure if they are straight up emulation or if some porting was involved. Personally I love the initial selection. =D http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011...n-for-new-exclusive-games-throughout-october/ "Also starting tomorrow as part of Only On PSN, we’ll also be offering a selection of rare classic games in the PlayStation Store: God Hand, GrimGrimoire, Maximo: Ghosts to Glory, Odin Sphere and Ring of Red." :033:
If it was straight up emulation, couldn't they make the originals playable on PS3? That's a great selection though.
That is the question that we will have to wait till it's out to find out. Pure ps2 emulation is technically not fully possible on ps3 (not fast enough gpu bus) but maybe some games are simple enough that they can work. That or maybe they just emulate the CPU side and do some crazy custom HLE per game on the GPU side. Last option is sony just made some custom build setup and gave it to devs to just simply recompile their games will to run as native ps3 apps (it's what they did for Monster Hunter Portable 3 on PS3, it's an abstraction layer that lets them rebuild their psp game to run as a native ps3 app).
Those where not emulated. Those where straight up ports done by another studio. All HD remasters so far are ports. The stuff hitting PSN this week (according to a src on neogaf) seem to be pure emulation, with no additional changes (trophies, etc) and will hit for $10.
so in the end it was possible to have ps2 BW compatibility but sony kept it away to charge extra $$$ for old games?
I think that's glossing over it a bit. Not like sony didn't blow shit-ton of cash pre ps3 to try releasing a fully compatible emu. If that emu was just so dandy why the need to resort with hw? =) Something tells me the situation will be heavily akin to xbox games on 360. Not a complete emu, requires custom tweaks for a set of games.
I always tought it to be a matter of laziness/short time to tweak it when the ps3 was freshly released...
PS3 doesn't have the same buss speed required by the GS/GPU on the ps2. Hell when they went half emulation on 2nd gen ps3, they emulated the CPU yet left HW GPU. Also if the rumors are true, the games will launch at $10 each. Compared to other services that is far from gouging.
yeah far from gouging, but bullshit if you already own the game. Just makes you wonder how in the world Sony is going to make it able for us to play PSP games we already own on the PSVita without a UMD drive, without making it easy for someone to go and take a picture of a UPC code in a store and use that to get the game.
But if you own the game you possibly own a way to play it still. I question this my self as well. I think they're best just making an external UMD drive attachment if someone wants to play UMDs on their Vita. I sadly knew it would end up like this so i've somewhat switched to digital purchases anyway (higher chance of playing them on future devices vs sony isn't going to keep making a way to play UMDS on furuter systems).
This pisses me off. I've already got all 5 of those games and I expect their value to drop. Then again I can get pissed off about almost anything videogame related. Bad for me but good for new gamers who don't have these excellent titles.
Because their Backwards compatibly just went 'poof' into thin air, they get people to buy their games again? Although it's good to always have digital copies, this is really ripping off loyal Playstation 3 customers don't you think?
And I was ridiculed when I suggested Sony dropped PS2 compatibility to make money off rereleases. Subbie continues to defend Sony. I'm glad some thing never change.
