That was mostly for the PS3 units out there that have partial HW. There was some GPU emulation files but nobody (far as I've seen) has turned that into a fully working emulator like they did with the PS1 emu on PSP. What ever makes you feel better about your self then man.
I think people are confused. This doesn't mean there is some magic emulator loading ISOs on the PS3. Just like on the Xbox 360, there isn't a general purpose Xbox 1 emulator that will try to play any game either. While the games might be "emulated" it isn't the same as loading up your NES, SNES, etc. romz on your PC, PSP, Xbox 1, or whatever. It's more like the old UltraHLE emulator where it can emulate the games but has to be tuned (and tested) for each game. It's not something they can actually throw out to the general public to play their original PS2 discs. While they could potentially make it utilize the original disc, that ceases to make sense given that each title likely needs hand tuning and more importantly testing. Thus they can't give it away for free. Plus above all else, PS2s are cheap. Just use one of them. It would be nice though if Sony would re-introduce a PS3 with PS2 hardware inside as a more expensive option, if only to make the complainers stop whining about it.

Well that was interesting-ish, So I ended up with two games (for some reason I didn't get hit with tax on psn and i'm not the only person this has happen to for canada, others on neogaf also noticed it). Oh well no complaint (I got 2 games vs 1, I only had $20 in my PSN wallet). Emulation wise things seem to be normal. No major issues from the two games I played but... I did notice a few odd things like the in game xmb replacement (like on ps1 games) does not pause the game and you can still see it running in the background. Not a huge issue but god hand doesn't let me pause the game and I got interupted by a call. =(. Video options are a little odd as well. You have your normal "Normal" & "Widescreen" settings. Both seem to just upscale the final image (much like PS2 BC on PS3 does, i know since mine is a BC PS3). Yet there is a 3rd option which is called none and sellecting it restarts the display/signal in 480p. Rather odd option to have imo because PS2 games via BC don't have the option (I just checked) and to the best of my knowledge PS1 games don't either. =/ Other options are about the same. No In Game XMB (so no friends list/messages), so much like ps1 games. Games do include manuals that are straight up scans of the retail manuals (sony doesn't get enough credit for this, I prefer the original manuals over the hacked up crap nintendo does). PS2 games do get their own folder on the XMB (if you have folder sorting on) but oddly the XMB icons are the PS2 boxes which kind of looks like crap at that size (should have just used the PSN Store icons instead, much nicer). Over all, For $10 on games I didn't have disc to I can't complain much. They could have easily gone for $15+ (Chrono Trigger PS1 just hit the store today as well and it's $10). Pretty decent choices for the first batch (all 6 games are good ones worth the price). I kind of wish sony would just embrace supporting games rendering at a higher resolution (specially if these games require special tweaking on the emulation side, they're already making custom changes, they could just make a few more). Oh for anybody slightly tempted (not many I presume), For the month of October, if you spend over $60 from your PSN wallet (not in a single purchase I believe), you will get a $10 psn voucher/credit. There is some good stuff that hit today and will be all month (space channel 5 hit today as well). http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/10/04/playstation-store-update-207/ "Don’t forget that through the entire month of October, spend $60 in the Store through the month of October, and receive $10 back in November! That goes for anything that uses funds from your Wallet." --edit-- One additional note. One thing that excites me about all of this is the though of Japan getting on board and JPN PS2 games hitting PSN.PS2/PS1 games via disc are not region free but PS1 games via PSN are region free (and one can expect PS2 will be as well).
Sweet. I'm tempted to get Maximo: Ghosts to Glory but i'll wait a bit. Just spent some money on new games.
A sad state, everything going to download purchases. No thanks, I'll stick with the PS2 HDAdvance/HDloader method and play all my games with the convenience of a PS2 Fat hard drive. The PS2 games in the original disc, case and manual. PS2 Maximo: Ghosts to Glory is only $2.99 at Gamestop. Probably will be disc only at most locations, but at least a disc that can be reinstalled again years later. PS3 Backup online support will go away when the PS4 comes out.
Since you're not getting a digital manual, wouldn't it be cheaper to buy the disc only and a PSone console? $10 seems a bit steep to me.
Hmm Ring of Red would be tempting (if I still had a PS3...) as for the other games, I never heard of them but I guess they were chosen with good reason. You never did mention how well RoR played though, subbie Is it worth a tenner?
I totally agree with you (specially on the HDLoader comment) I don't like digital distribution at all, but don't get me wrong. I don't see anything wrong on selling old classics in digital form. This allows many people to try games that they ended up missing. For example, when i buy old / used games, i always look for disc without scratches, case and manual in good condition. Believe it or not, it's sometimes difficult to find a particular game in good condition, not to mention the overpriced maniacs that put "RARE" on anything. Anyway, it's good to have an option in this case. And this is what digital distribution must be. An option. If people don't care about disc and manual, and just want to play the game there's PSN, Xbox Live, Steam,... If they want a physical copy, they just look for it on a store, auctions and so on.
The shape of things to come Not the ideology of games being rehashed to a newer console, but the same exact games for repurchase on a newer console. The problem is the Digital Download format is taking over, there will be no choice of a hard copy. As far as the PSN PS2 list, most of the games are cheaper on the original disc at $2.99 at Gamesop, yet how many would rather buy the convenient click my charge card download vs leave the hibernation house? I bought a obscure game for the Wii called Geon Cube on disc, the other consoles are a DRM only purchase. Thankfully the ICO-Shadow Colossus HD set came out as a PS3 disc. But how many other PS2 games will be chopped from the HD Disc option and only be a DRM? The industry is changing, eventually all the games and maybe even movies will be in a Stream Steam format only. Less upfront expense for the game companies, and an increasing number of buyers that would rather not go to the store.
I disagree. Like i said, i don't like digital distribution. But i have no problem of it being an option. Everybody said Mp3's would kill the CD and there's still cd's being sold worldwide. Hell, even LP's are starting to get popular again. Same as movies. Companies like Netflix, Vudu, Hulu,... makes movies and tv shows available digitally, but DVD's and Blu-rays keep on selling. We have Steam, but many people still buy games on DVDs. I don't think everybody would accept content being available only in digital forms, and i can bet some companies did research on this. The PSPGo was a huge commercial failure that proved not everybody is comfortable with only having one option to access content (plus it was overpriced). The Vita will have a physical media, proving that Sony learned the lesson. My major concern today is that companies transform the online passes into something like a "right to play pass", meaning that even single player games need a code to be played. PS: As for the Classics HD, they are remastered PS2 games. To be honest, only games that are worth it should receive this treatment.
Umm.. What?!?! All PS1 & PS2 classics not only include a Digital Manual, it's a Perfect scan of the game's original manual (not some hacked up shitty footnotes quick start manual). The godhand manual even still includes a small add telling people to go out and buy Okami for PS2. Also a PS2 console (in any reasonable shape) is going to cost you a lot more then $10. $10 for a digital PS2 game is dirt cheap compared to what XBL wants for an Xbox game or the fact nintendo charges $10 for N64 games. No they will not. PSN is being built as a universal service for sony devices. Sony is already proving this fact with PS Vita which will have instant access to pretty much your entire PSP PSN library (PSP/PS1/TG16 purchases). The only things that won't transfer are a few games over licensing issues (but are still available for download for psp). Sony also does already support the idea of paying for a game once and it works across multiple systems (Purchased PS1 games will play on psp, ps3 & vita (when out) with out requiring you to buy them again). It's one thing to prefer physical medium out of preference but to prefer it based on false assumptions is naive. Oh. RoR looks to play fine but is a bit dated. I sadly only played a bit since I end up getting GodHand and putting most of my time in it. I'd personally say all the games released are worth $10. two amazing 2d games from vanillaware, Maximo is great looking/challanging/fun, Godhand is a beloved cult classic from Shinji mikami (RE/Vanquish), and Ring of Red (new to me but a well loved SRPG.
According to EU ps blog, Soon but no date set for PS2 classics. So sadly no clue exactly when and what games. I'm eagerly waiting to hear word for japan.
Just an update. Since I'm currious and taking advantage of PSN not charging tax atm (odd) & the Spend $60/recieve $10. I bought Maximo & Grimgrimoire tonight and here are a few impressions. Grimgrimoire: 2D art still looks amazing but I noticed some issues in this game. I noticed during story sequences at the start the screen seem to chug a bit when in 720p (normal & stretched mode) but when I went to 480p (none mode) the jitters/slowdowns when large sprites scrolled went away. I found this kind of odd since it's believed the emulator just renders in native res and upscales the final image. Even though this happened it was not serious and had no affect on music/sfx/voiceovers. Just something to take into consideration. Other then that there where a few small gfx bugs but I only saw them on the saving screen (you know like when sometimes things are upresed in emus when an object is composed of a group of sprites you get odd lines inbetween them from bad upressing). It's a really silly gripe this one and will probably get fixed as the emu matures (The ps1 emu we have today on psp/ps3 is sooooo much refined from it's first version on psp) Maximo: Wow this game runs amazingly well (60fps, no slowdowns I can notice). Textues look great and the gameplay it self still holds up well. Also a pleasant surpise for me is I though the Maximo I had on disc was the first one but it's actually the second one, so I did not just rebuy a game I already own. xD Only gripe with the game is not an emulation problem but just a game mechanic problem, 2nd analog doesn't control camera, but the game level design is kind of linear so it's not a huge problem. This game seriously looks great on my 40" HDTV. Based on short plays of the 4(of 5) games I bought (and knowing Odin Sphere from playing it in the past on ps2). I'd rank the games in this order. While all 5 are well worth $10, I would highly recommend the first 2 if your bored and need something to play, even more so then most PSN/XBLA games you could get for $10. I hope to god Japan gets on board soon with some PS2 games. 1. Maximo 2. Odin Sphere 3. God Hand 4. GRIMgRiMoiRe 5. Ring of Red
Maximo is an awesome game. Did you know it started out as a N64 title? That's right, Ghouls 'n' Ghosts 64 or something to that avail. I'm a big fan of the series in general, despite the earlier games being somewhat brutal - they were a ton of fun.
