Hello again.. I remember before the PS2 was released there were amazing tech demos showcasing the 'power' of the PS2. I stumbled across descriptions and pictures here.. http://uk.ps2.ign.com/articles/072/072823p1.html http://uk.media.ps2.ign.com/articles/072/072823/imgs_1.html Now, I've never seen a PS2 game with effects like any of those pictures. Their stupid hype promised graphics that were never delivered. Anyhoo, does anyone have a video of these tech demos, or more photos? I had a magazine with this article in but for some reason I can't find that issue!
I don't mean to be rude, buy have you actually played on a PS2? There's nothing there that I have not seen done already in-game. The Dreamcast can do as good as most of that, and that was less powerful. Just fire up disc 4 of Shenmue and go through that explanation rubbish.
Yes, Tachikoma, I have played lots of Ps2 games, and I have actually owned two of them! I love how the PS2 has been going for ages now, causing developers to squeeze all the processing power out of it that they can with programming skills and tricks etc etc (I also think the 'Cube and original Xbox were killed off waaaay too early, so much untapped potential) but I haven't seen anything of the quality of the fuzzy balls or sparks in any game.. Oh, and I remember disc 4 of Shenmue- being able to move the camera/light source while the old dude was talking. That was pretty sweet and I know the the PS2 can do that, along with the GT2000 demo.. I'm thinking more about the fuzzy balls and sparks with the more 'advanced' effects, etc. ..I seem to remember 'Toy Story' quality graphics were promised somewhere along the line. Hey, perhaps it can render these things with no game logic running, but I think it was misleading. I can find the video of the Ridge Racer and Old Man tech demos, but I'd really like to find the Crash Bandicoot and sparks demos, too..
I remember that too. Something about life-like crap and unbelievable AI too. Supposedly Sony's big mouth was one of the reasons the DC tanked. If only they could have made true their promises.... PS2 was OK but nothing like was promised.
This is an old GAF argument, they usually drag out the Silent hill 3 old dude head for the old dude head demo. As for PS2 promise, see Tekken 5 and God of War 2. They look pretty good to me. The toy story quote is actually about XBox. http://news.cnet.com/2100-1040-250632.html But you really don't want to get into the he said she said bull****, in the words of Limp Bizkit I believe. Marketing people talk a lot of crap.
For some good graphics (and good games): - God of War / God of War 2 - Gran Turismo 3 / Concept / 4 - Shadow of the Colossus - Kingdom Hearts / Kingdom Hearts 2 - Metal Gear Solid 2 / Metal Gear Solid 3 - Jak (all 3) - Ratchet & Clank (all 3) - Resident Evil 4 (believe me, not as good as the GC version, but very good since it's a port) - Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution - Tekken 5 - Okami - Burnout 3 / Revenge / Dominator - Ace Combat 4 / 5 / Zero - Zone of the Enders / Zone of The Enders 2 - Silent Hill 2 / 3 / 4 - ...
Sony won the "BS of the year" award saying the PS2 would be like Matrix in real time or some shit. The main problem werent the consummers IMO, they were still buying the DC 'cause it had some great games that made the PSX look outdated at best. The problem were all the developers that believed Sony (or had some sort of "compensation" if you catch my drift) and jumped ship, creating a trust-void in SEGA and the DC, which prompted the decision to cancel the console. The irony...
I guess the compensation is that even crappy games sell a shitload of copies, on the playstation. I also hate sony, but they don't deserve the "BS of the year" award. I guess an "BS of a decade" award would be better.
I remember the hype where they said that PS2's Emotion Engine in TOOL environment was capable of rendering Final Fantasy The Movie, which was just utter crap.
maybe is fair to say that this statement isn't accurate ... ps2 "hardware" was involved in FF movie (at least sometime) http://www.assemblergames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18036 And the tech demos are under a lot of games of ps2. Gt2000 is gt2 basically with "some changes". GT3 and GT4 are better (a lot better). The FF8 dancing ... nothing special The guy face ... well, is only one face, you have for example the faces in SH2 or better in SH3. etc etc
no it wasnt. Contrary to popular belief, the GSCube was never actually used in the FF movie that came out around that time. There's an interview of some guy to this avail, should be somewhere in the sony dev section.
It was capable of rendering it, Sony showed a demonstration of it rendering scenes from the movie in real-time. However, it was not used for the Spirits Within.
Fantastic- those are the pics I was looking for. None of these tech demos seem impressive anymore. Its just the fluff balls and sparks that seem a bit out of the PS2's reach..
It was used for demoing scenes in FF:TSW, but rendering them with 1/4 or less of the details, which isnt impressive for an expensive piece of pro HW.
