Yes that’s a 10000 drive, you might be better off buying a working scph 1x000 and just replacing the whole thing. Also check the ribbon cable from the dvd drive to the board, I have seen those get torn by the fan in a t10k

That's what I am going to do for now.
Do you know if the SCPH-10000 and the SCPH-15000 used the same drive? As in, am I better off sourcing a 10000 or a 15000?
The ribbon cable luckily is in perfect shape.

Understood, although did you see the yellow warning sticker on the DVD cover? I don't think the retail units have it. Also, checking the plastic molded part numbers (e.g. the tray has code TP3-2), they differ from other models. In the video I posted above, where the guy is servicing a SCPH-15000, the tray code reads TP7-3.

I do actually remember a small difference, one of them lacked threading in some screw holes due to the different mount, one of them I found also had a serial number tag on it, there are a lot of small variations in these early drives but all of them seem to be interchangeable. If a sticker or mold number is important to you try to preserve that part but I’d use what works. This repair should cost very little and the leftovers should be able to cover your cost.

I just ordered a seemingly working 15000 from Japan for $20. I had other stuff coming in at the same time (Buyee) so it will be in the same box for some additional shipping cost... that will be a start that should fix things for now, then I can go look for the best possible option.

UPDATE: success! The DVD tray transplant from the SCPH-15000 drive to the TOOL drive turned out to work perfectly. I examined the two trays and they are virtually identical, albeit coming from different molds. It is clear that one is a tiny variation of the other, or produced at different injection molding plants.

All is good, my TOOL is back in perfect shape :)
