All, I am an Atari ST/Amiga/SNES/PS1 fan. I like the old school games. Last month I purchased a used PS3 (finally). I'm having difficulty finding a PS3 game that I like to play more than 5 minutes. I don't care for RPGs or first person shooters. Can anyone recommend ANY PS3 games (including Downloadable games) that have old school playability? I tried TMNT Turtles in Time and Final Fight ...they were fun but I quickly became bored. I have: Hamster Ball and it is an OK since it reminds me of Marble Madness. But I also purchased little big planet, toy story, paradise city, turok, mini ninjas, beowolf, motorstorm pacific rift, vikings, tomb raider underworld, and bionic commando. None of these games really do anything for me. Ice Age wasn't too bad since it plays like Crash Bandicoot, but it's too kiddie-like. Am I just bored of gaming?? Where are the games like Raiden Project? Is Joe Danger worth a download? I spent $60 on downloadable content and I think I got ripped off. Ohh....I downloaded a demo of Death Spank and it was cool but all of the tasks became annoying. I just want to play a mindless game. (Is there one like Zombies Ate My Neighbors???) Thanks for any tips or suggestions.
I don't agree. I've had so much fun with PS3 games it's not even funny. But that's just me Games you will want to look into. Soldner X1 and X2 Thexder Neo Mega Man 9 and 10 Super Puzzle Fighter 2 turbo HD Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD 1942 Joint Strike Commando 3 wolf of the battlefield Bionic Commando Re-armed Rocket Knight After Burner Climax Bomberman Ultra(love this game) Echochrome MVC2 that's all I can think of off the top of my head
LOL yeah they suck... The PS3 was one of the consoles that I VERY SHORTLY OWNED and I set a record of that since I only had mine for a very short amount of time! Fiddled around with it for an hour give or take till I was like Meh I'm tradin this unit off for something else!!! And snapped up a Elite 360! But I didn't get a chance to try out the game I purchased which was Pitfall I think you may like it maybe not cuz it's actually some sort of RPG game.
You should probably read reviews before buying shit like Beowulf and Iceage. No wonder. Still, you do name some good games as being crap. This kind of thread is going to end up as troll bait I think.
If your a fan of old PS1 games then I think you got the right system since you can buy some old PS1 games off the store (Wii is obviously better though for classics). Anyways there are some good games on the store but I think you kind of blind bought a lot of crap. =/ I'd say check into the stuff Vosse listed. You should find something you're looking for there. I highly recommend hitting up Thexder Neo, Bionic Commando Re-armed (Not the same as the retail game, This is more akin to the old NES game) & Mega Man 9/10 for some good retro style fun. Also for the love of god, Don't trade off your PS3 for a 360. You're going to get stuck in the same pit you are in now (just with a **** ton of more shooters). If you must, Buy a Wii.
I guess one of the main points of getting a NEW console is to be able to get the NEW experience, graphics and the like. Most of my most-played PS3 games are either arcade ports (MK2, Outrun with a wheel, Virtua Fighter 5) or somehow "special". I avoid the loads of crap that comes out on the console, including ALL minis - horrible art work on all of them, seriously. As such I can highly recommend: 3D Dot Game Heroes - check it out ASAP if you're into NES and Zelda. Wipeout and its expansion GTi Club Outrun Online Arcade Flower (loved it, very relaxing and stress-free) Soldner X (very hard) Solnder X2 (really fun, variable difficulty) 1942: Joint Strike (emphasis on the Joint) Mortal Kombat II arcade Motorstorm: Pacific Rift (very nice and addictive game, I like it a lot more than the burnout stuff) Prince of Persia Classic (the original remade with newer graphics, controls are similar but better imo) Joe Danger (I don't own this one yet but it's on my wish list) probably a few more
I never heard of Soldner X, 1942 Joint Strike, or Thexder Neo. The problem with PS Network is they don't give previews of the games to download so I skip a lot of them. Sounds like Vosse's list might be mostly downloadable games so I'll try those first. As far as picking a blind lot of PS3 so far, I picked up the cheapest non-fps games from Gamestop when they had buy 2 get 1 free used sale. (with the exception of toy story) What about Braid? Is that any good? I'm not going to give up on PS3. My kids still play Toy Story, Little Big Planet, and TMNT on it.
Quite funny to see most peoples favourites are PSN downloadable "small" games instead of the big expensive releases. I agree with the lists posted above like barc0des, those are my favourites too,
I own a 360 rather than a PS3, but I'd go with this advice too. If the PS3 doesn't satisfy then the 360 won't either. It's a time-control puzzle-platformer with a wonderful ambience. It's probably a bit overrated at this point but it's definitely worth experiencing. I'll throw a nod to Super Puzzle Fighter as well, easily my favourite after Tetris in that genre.
You can have fun if you want to have fun. One of my first PS3 games was HAZE. It was a terrible game. But I loved playing it and beating it. There are few games I really dislike. Like Braid. I hate Braid. If you have a negative attitude towards something and then try and experience, there's a much greater chance of you hating it. Unfortunately I don't know if this is a controllable/changeable mindset.
MotorStorm Pacific Rift - Never thought it would be so fun, difficult and addicting! One true underrated game. Burnout Paradise - Anyone who loves the Burnout series will have fun here. Plus you can get it from the PSN Store (if you don't care about physical media) with all the add-ons for a very cheap price. Wipeout HD Fury - Anyone should have the chance to play this, both the offline and online modes. One of the most fantastic games of this generation. Joe Danger - Excitebike meets Trials HD. Great game, tons fun and very challenging. After Burner Climax - It's not a very lenghty game, but anyone who likes After Burner series will have a smile on the face while playing this. Infamous - Great open world game with cool eletric super powers. Uncharted - Fantastic game! Great story, graphics, controls, ... And the sequel (that i have yet to play) it's even better. Also, if you like the Ratchet & Clank series, there's 3 games on the PS3 (1 of them is avaiable at the PSN Store). I wouldn't recommend GT5: Prologue, mostly because GT5 release is very close. I know you're not interested on FPS, but you should give Killzone 2 a chance. Don't think it's similar to CoD:MW2 or BBC2. Plus Killzone 2 multiplayer is actually addicting and incredible entertaining.
Why would you buy movie license games? No wonder you think games stink nowadays, you've been playing stinky games
About me not liking FPS games: if there were a cheat disc (gameshark) for the PS3 then I would pick up some of the fps games. I'm used to Quake III Arena on the PC armed with a keyboard and mouse. I can't get used to using a joystick with any degree of accuracy for fps. I have Killzone on PS2 and can't beat the stupid game (which is why I'm looking for a gameshark/codebreaker for ps2...) I'll try some of the titles mentioned above. As far as Motorstorm Pacific Rift, Walmart was selling it new for $15 so I picked it up a few weeks ago. The graphics were cool but I didn't care for it. It was too hard to control plus it seemed like any of the cars I wanted I had to buy from PSN. (or was that Burnout Paradise City which I also didn't care for)
It's not really an "old-school" style game, but I really like Heavy Rain. As far as games that tell a story it's pretty high up there on my list.
+1 for this. Only just managed to complete the game tonight, and damn was it tough. Now time to go through NG+ and go for the platinum :gravedigging:.
I recommend Star Ocean 4. It's good, has japanese voice over and good-old action rpg combat from the snes tales of phantasia and star ocean 1 days. Check it out.
Nothing wrong with not liking FPS. I'm not a big fan of them my self (at least anymore). I think I just got tired of playing FPS over the years and I just chalk it up to having that old geezer mentality where nothing is as good as they use to be (sure i'm only 27 but I was playing fps back in the wolf3d/doom1 era). I think I pretty much grew out of them after Halo 1 & R6 3: Raven Shield (PC, **** that shitty xbox ver). Yeah, I think that is burnout you're talking about. I personally love motorstorm but I never take it seriously (AI is shit). It's also great fun with a group of friends watching people take turns on a course and seeing how ****ed up the racing can get. If you want a racer that is fun but a little more serious then burnout or motorstorm, Look into Dirt 2. I have it for PC (thanks to a $10 D2D sale) and it's really good.
Pass the pad with a few mates on time trials is great fun with a few beers. The rest of the game... the less said the better, really.
