people payed around $500 to get a ps2 off ebay when it first came out why wouldn't they pay that for the ps3
Well the yen conversion of the PSP didn't favor the dollar, so you never know they might want to market this thing at $499 stateside, now that I think about it. Hell they'll probably convert and round up for other markets. Hmm, it could be part of some Sony-style campaign or something like that, the new chic item, only the cool rich people will own. Then again, for the US market $400 and up is killer for the mainstream market. Didn't the PSP only sell half it's intial run because of that high price tag (and some might say so-so line up of games). Seems like there will be only one version of the 360 at launch anyway, and it will include a hard drive, that is if you believe IGN
I never said that the price would effect collectors or hardcore gammers. They will buy it no matter what. However I think the "chic" thing will not work for videogames. PS3 is not an iPOD becuase you still have to buy games. Once you buy an iPod you have effectivley bought everything you need, this is not true with consoles. I knew many rich business people who bought every new system at launch and bought a grand total of 5 games or less. They never bought a single game after the "wow" factor wore off. If sony is after this type of customer they are going to be in for a rude awakening. The best customers are clueless parents going for the impulse buy to satisfy thier children. If you cut the parents out, you cut out the software profits. As we all know the money is not in the system, its in the games.
Assembler: You heard whether or not it will output 15khz signal for PS1 and low-res PS2 emulation? I would hate to imagine playing those games with scaling filters.
It was imressive to say the least, but I think thats going a bit overboard. Theirs that word again ----- As far as the price is concerned, I think $400 is reasonable. Considering the fact that console R&D as well as manufacturing costs have been going up steadily for many years now, and we havn't seen the initial base consumer price go up any, its about time. The corporations constantly lose money on hardware sales, and rely entirly on software to offset it. But after a certan per-console loss is reached it becomes feasable to increase the price, assuming its believed that: (A.) It will be comparable to the competitions price, and... (B.) The consumer will be willing to pay it. Looks like Sony belives both of those pre-requisits have or will be met in this comming generation.
All this talk about cost made me remember one thing. Tons of people paid $300 or even more for a PSP. The PS3 will have a "normal" price compared to that. Anyway, glad i started my savings 6 months ago
Nah. Not Sony at least. Read: http://www.actsofgord.com/Proclamations/chapter02.html Admittedly they've spend a lot in R&D for PS3, but guaranteed they won't be selling at a loss.
Pixar is at film resolution, it's far more complex than console. I would expect the ps2 /psone support to be a ps2 on a chip solution. That has a psone core at the heart, so it's probably cheaper then getting the cell to do it. Then again, the cell could emulate ten playstation 2 units running at once and still have cpu cycles free. But then you have to store the emu program somewhere on the ps3 bios.
"So just one configuration is targeted for the Holiday release? Yeah, given that we know we’re going to have to hustle to produce all that people are going to want, that kind of keeps life a lot simpler for the retailers. If you said, “Look we’re coming to market with three configurations, and we were in short supply, and we got the wrong mix of configurations,†it would just compound all the problems. We’re really quite excited about the proposition for having just the one configuration in market particularly for this holiday." There once and for all... Paulo Great find that answers all our questions and beliefs. Although reading into it looks like there will be backwards compatibility but they are only testing it on certain games. Great article
