I have just recently installed the latest version of Codename: Rebug's CFW 3.55 on my Retail PS3!! It is the Rebug Firmware, that essentially turns a Retail Console into a Debugging Station without the ability to downgrade!! Has anyone had any dealings with this?? And if so what is it used for?? And how do you use the features of it??
So you just made your ps3 near worthless to the average person? I hope you have access to a master disc utility or beta discs.
What do you mean by that?? It has boot managers and other programs on it! I can always re-flash it back to OFW 3.55 whenever!! We don't get that type of software here in New Zealand! You can only get it on Ebay or here!!
I guess what I am trying to say is it's a debug and not a TOOL. Unless you plan to run betas on it, function is limited.
It's a retail unit with the rebug software loaded on it, all it means is that it has the features of a Debug unit withouy the ability to downgrade!! I was just wanting to know what the features are??
Not even all the betas would run, rebug is pretty much running the debug vsh on a retail box with a couple of lv2 patches here and there, lv2 is still retail and lacks all of the debug syscalls, also appldr wont detect the console as a debug and will not allow debug edata to be used, aim_spu also wont detect the console as a true debug console and you will lack features such as bdemu or the debugger. Finally you of course can't use debug pups to update/downgrade. P.S. Debugging stations allow development and debugging just fine, the tools don't have any more features except for the extra ram and lan port (the later can be replaced with dual settings allowing you to use the wifi for the internet and ethernet for debugging). (Especially 3rd party units)
Why would I want to do that?? I was running Kmeaw CFW3.55, but just changed over to Rebug CFW3.55!! I will in no way ever get back on PSN with an official console, I like being able to save games to an HDD and playing them that way!!
PS2 Games on DECHA (The REAL debug boxes) are already region free, the fake region used in the debug settings has nothing to do with ps2 games. Rebug doesn't even remotely allows the ps3 to run ps2 games without region lockouts. The region you set in the debug settings isn't the real region, the real region is in pscode, it's a debug region set through the target id, it's supposed to be 0x82 and returned by aim_spu_module, rebug doesn't patch that. As for the fake regions they are there for developers to test how their games behave on different regions, for instance some games such as Rachet and Clank will display a Japanese title screen when the console's region is set to Japan (0x83 on a real retail console) and so on. As I've stated, Rebug doesn't even go near the functionalities of a real debug console, it doesn't even have a debugger running. You can also forget about bdemu or masterdiscs, forget about running any title that's not compiled as "Release" as well, forget also about native fself support, or debug edata support and so on (The list is long).
It's for the novelty, apparently people like novelty. From what I can tell it's like running the Katana firmware on a retail dreamcast, only really effectively alters aesthetics
