Or the fact the industry is focusing more on consoles with special services being released for consoles first (Ubisoft does, Activision does)

Along with that the PC is nothing but FPS, RTS and MMO titles. There are people who play other genres.

its not just about the raw processing power though or the mhz / ghz it can churn out / clock, as intel found out when AMD came out with their Athlon series CPU's it's how well the complete package works and how well / easily developers can make use of and take advantage of any stats advantage which early on, barring maybe first party launch titles may not even be a factor

That's true, but I wasn't talking about clock speeds so much the components themselves. It may or may not be possible to benchmark the systems themselves, but if the components are basically PC parts (which they are, in the case of the PS4 at least), then it should be possible to compare them via benchmarks of the PC versions.

And why do you think Ubi and Activision started doing that? Because consoles have a larger market-share, half due to followers and the "main stream" mindset.

Also, citation needed on the last statement. PC has more than just 3 genres, it has just as many as console. You can't say there is only 3 genres because many pc gamers play those types of games. That's like saying modern consoles only have FPS because most modern console players play Call of Duty.

the problem with using benchmarks of the pc hardware, is that the actual software for the ps4 will be optimised to run on the exact hardware setup (and the actual os) whereas the pc benchmarks are not. so may not relate to real world ability, but would probably give a rough idea

I think that the original argument is that PC's run the same current or next gen triple A titles as consoles but do so with higher quality for a lower price point after the initial investment is made through cheaper game content and tech lasting through the cycle of a Console. Being able to play a game which fully expresses the developers depth of vision. Consoles are secondary in that process. If one is a gaming purist and wants to experience the razor's edge, sitting co pilot with the developer, who is building, tweaking and enhancing graphic engines to realize the full conceptual potential, then the PC is the ideal route.

I compare it to being at a movie, in line on opening night, getting the best seats to view the screen. This mentality may be similar to the mindset of a PC gamer.
I can respect that dedication, but personally, I am fine with seeing the .50 cent matinee several months later or to be more specific, watch it years later on netflix.

Outside of this niche of gamers chasing the dragon, or seeking out the cutting edge, the argument doesn't really have much appeal beyond the consideration of long term
economics of having a PC with lower price points for games.

There is no doubt that Console ports of PC games are scaled back with no future mod support to raise the graphical bar down the line or fan made additives.

Consoles are the industries main revenue source and are taken care of. Xbox 360 handled PC ports well while the unique architecture of the PS3 made porting more difficult. Skyrim can be used as a case in point. So, again, it's an issue of purity, from developer to gamer, how much is lost in translation.

Edit: All of this occurs with major big league developer houses with triple A titles, so if you are not dedicated to the multi million dollar big league productions, then the issue is mute. Besides, there are many exclusives which don't make it to PC.

    obviously I'm exaggerating...but sure, i'll bite.

    http://store.steampowered.com/stats/

here you go. Am I HATING On PC gaming? no.

But I left the PC market because it got stale. FPS FPS FPS, and I don't like RTS, MOBA, or MMO. All that leaves are simulators and FPS titles for the most part.

Side scrollers don't come out on PC outside of indie titles, 3d platformers dont come out for it anymore, rhythm games don't either. It's a different breed.

And for the record, that "Xbox 360 hur hur nothing but FPS titles hur hur dur" comment heard a thousand times into the sun shows complete sheer ignorance.

Considering the best selling Xbox 360 title is Kinect fucking Adventures.

To be fair, FPSs are the most popular genre on consoles too, as proven by your link where 7 of the top 10 are FPS games and GoW 2 is a TPS, which is pretty much the same thing (and wouldn't be on the chart anymore with Black Ops II and Halo 4 now in there anyway). MOBA aka games for screeching retarded (man)children seems to be the 2nd most popular on PCs though, and thankfully they're not on consoles.
You forgot to mention fighting games as another genre that PCs don't have - I'd list all the major releases from the past couple of years that didn't come out on PC, but it's much easier to list the one that did: Street Fighter X Tekken, a broken port of a game that sucked to begin with.

That came out more than a couple of years ago. I literally meant "the last two years" when I said a couple of years.

I did a project one time searching for common themes and phrases in games from 1988-1991. Violence, by means of punching, attacking or shooting, was always at the top of the list and the most often emphasized theme for games even back then. Most of those advertisements and game reviews were for NES games too. The industry hasn't changed as much as people like to think, but the types of games have.

Ten years ago I wouldn't have dreamed of using my PC as my primary game platform for modern games, it just wouldn't have had enough of the games I wanted (non-FPS Action games) to justify such a decision. Today though, actually for the last five years, I have been able to wait for the PC version and run it in better form than consoles could. Having never spent more than about $120 on a video card, and having just last upgrade finally broke the $100 mark on a CPU upgrade, I find this rather unprecedented. I even use the same controller on my modern game console as I do on PC, that was fairly unrealistic before the current generation as well. At any rate, it is because of these things and the fact that I have been interested in less than one new game each year for the last seven years that I have decided to consider game consoles "dead to me" from now on.

That, and my cabinet is full of consoles I actually want and own dozens of games for already. ;)

Kinect adventures CAME WITH KINECT. When everyone scrambled to buy kinects (including a more family oriented market) they also bought Kinect adventures because it was included in the box.

And, again, you can't judge the market by the majority of what people play. There are many great titles that pertain to all types of genres on the pc, you just lack to recognize them. You were also just looking at steam, do you know how many games people are playing right now that arn't connected to steam? We arn't talking about who is playing what, we are talking about what is available to play.

That was a simile to what you were trying to say. It wasn't "ignorance", I know how many great titles there are. You, on the other hand, judge how many genres on the PC are available due to how many people play it.

Still, more people bought a Kinect than the latest CoD?

Also I don't think he was linking to Steam as a final word. Think of it as a measurable sample population.

One of the advantages of split-screen gaming is that being called a cheat is much rarer. Not completely unknown, of course, but very rare. Sadly, split-screen gaming is dying out in favour of one player per screen, as the latter means that every player has to buy a copy of the game, unlike the former.

First of all, PC gaming is NOT much better than consoles. Secondly, even if it was, everyone does NOT know it. And most console owners do NOT get a console just to be part of the crowd. Nor do Mac owners (I don't know what a Beat is), the few Mac owners I know bought theirs' because they love using Macs (though I don't see the attraction, myself).

And if you personally think that PC gaming is much better than console gaming, then why do you (and the tiny percentage of other PC gamers who feel the need to make themselves seem impressive by the power of their gaming hardware) bother saying so? If PC gaming was so much better than consoles then you'd be happy to play on your PC and leave everyone else to do what they like. You don't say "The PC is much more powerful than an Atari 2600", because that's obvious, and if it was also obvious as you (mistakenly) claim that PC gaming is so superior to console gaming, then you'd never feel the need to point it out.

But yet, there are no modern consoles that can even par up to a gaming PC.

If you say that most console owners don't buy their console to be apart of the crowd, ask any crowd of console gamers why they own their xbox and ps3. I can guarantee, the majority will say "Because me and my friends play call of duty" or the most recent sports game.

Explain to me what advantages consoles have over PC other than good local multiplayer.

To be fair, I think he's sharing his perspective about PC gaming due to this being a forum and more specifically a thread espousing the superiority of Pc's over consoles. Within forums, people tend to share their own opinions, perspectives, likes and dislikes... subjective stances.

On a separate point, it's interesting that many of the PC gamer's forum sites have current game developers participating and giving commentary on the latest tech and it's significance on today's gaming. The PC does seem to be the greatest weapon of choice for top shelve gaming. For the man with lamborghini tastes.

Come to think about it....the pc is the new NEO GEO!

Big Tymers, expensive hobbies and hot dog gaming experiences.

I like how you describe the PC as the new NEO GEO. But, the thing is, when you buy a pc, it isn't just a big scary console. You can do 1,000,001+ thing on a PC besides gaming. Not only do you get the most powerful gaming console on the market, but you get functionality.

This is true, though a gaming rig is special as it's primary function through the hardware is to play games. A PC can be acquired on craigslist for $50.00 . A gaming PC can be acquired on craigslist for $500.00

I have looked into buying one, as I want the maxed out fully fleshed gaming experience, but I don't have the disposable income to buy it right now. I could, but then I am catching head lice riding the bus if my car breaks down.

Regarding PC's being scary, I imagine that it's not fear that keeps many from a PC experience, but it's the level of dedication towards a type of gaming. For one, PC's aren't easily configured into a traditional living space where a console fits comfortably below a television where people tend to unwind. Secondly, consoles are easy. Others have mentioned the plug and play. In my case, I only got a current generation system (xbox 360) last October, so I am grabbing up old games for pennies. So, it's also about time tables. By the time I get the next gen system, there will be rumors and leaks about the PS5. I am purposefully a few years behind so that I can cheaply participate while not being driven by the new trends, attempting to keep up to satisfy my tastes, chasing after the latest instant gratification.

My argument may be unique, but if I had more dedication and easy money, I would surely participate in P.C gaming. My present rig can't play PS2 emulation very well. That's more incentive to evolve my pc setup than the latest games available.

In the end, the PC vs Console gaming argument is niche and only revolves around those whose taste is at the upper stratus. Many people are more casual in their approach and couldn't be bothered with making investment towards what is seemingly , barely noticeable differences.

If you look at screen shots today between xbox 360 and PC, I can't tell the difference unless it's pointed out. The fundamental mechanics of gameplay are intact in both forms. It's angels dancing on the head of a pin type argument.

I am aware that PC gamers fault the console market for keeping innovation grounded. Crysis 2 caused a lot of mayhem in the PC gaming sphere as the PC Port was leashed to the console level.

Again, market forces prevail in the end.
