Lol I remember there being a HUGE issue with ATi Radeon 9600XT cards and it took them like 4 years to update the drivers.

That's like 100 years in computer industry time.

I'm planning of moving to nVidia again, funny since after my last rig I vowed I would never use a nVidia GPU again.

I'll pick... whatever catches my interest the most. Like not being tied to any one OS or device, I don't stick to only PC or console gaming. If something wows me, it gets my money. If not, then I won't give it a second thought and return to the games I already have.

Exactly what I did, now I have nVidia cards across the board on my new equipment and have only had an issue with one game (rage - GTX680 black flicker texture issue), apart from that there are no problems in ether Linux or Windows, never looked back. I still have my old rig with a 9600XT (which was a 9800XT but the fans died) but that's just used as a backup server.

I did have ATI cards in everything (desktop and laptop) and can't count the hours of frustration and disappointment using them in Linux and Windows, the biggest being it's performance in Doom 3 (the 9800XT was supposedly built to cater for).

AMD (ATI) hardware is supposedly superior, however if they could just sort that driver support out then I'd consider moving back, but it would take a lot for moe to move back to the Radeon line because my memory and experiences are tainted with head banging frustration.

I get what you're saying. I Myself have a pretty powerful PC. I love playing my PC games and I know game consoles will never match it in power since a PC is easily upgradeable.

But...it's just so relaxing to just sit on my couch, pick up my controller, and play on my 65in LED. I like It because of the exclusives each system has and its nice to have a machine all built-up for you so you don't have to mess with it yourself. I plan on getting both next gen consoles but the PS4 is definitely first in my book. Both X1 and PS4 games looked incredible plus the PS4 is pretty powerful despite being inferior to a top of the line PC.

I like gaming on all machines

indeed, although i won't be switching to nvidia.

part of the problem was that ATI and now AMD cannot keep pace with the open source development on the OS side, so when things like xorg or kernels in general are updated it tends to break compatability which for some reason they like to link to the x version, the main issue is AMD wont open up their driver which would help with maintaining compatibility.

but anyway it has been steadily improving so i'll stick with AMD for now unless they give me a big reason to change to nvidia, ati/amd for me have always seemed better with regards to hardware / bang for buck although i hate that term.

however with the P$4 and M$ xboxone both utilising AMD hardware this should help with game porting in general and hopefully things like "Rage" from id won't happen as cross platform will be a shed load easier(hopefully)

The only case when AMD (video cards) are the best option for linux is netbooks. At least you'll get 6 years-old budget video with OGL 3.x (maybe 4.x now, dunno) support, unlike Intel GMA, which is (a few times) slower than Voodoo3 and lacks full hardware OpenGL 2.x

I'll be so pissed if Xbox 360 games are playable on the x86-based Xbox One and there still won't be a emulator for PC.

Also, in terms of PS4 and Xbox One, what will the HDD sizing options be? Can you install a 3rd party hard drive? What are the restrictions, etc?

There will never be an emulator for PC for a very long time. It's not just software, it's the fact that emulating requires a machine that is significantly more powerful.
So, essentially you can consider the Xbone not backwards-compatible because of this roadblock. If they wanted that to be possible, they'd have to cram a 360 on the motherboard.

Xbone has an internal 500gb non user replaceable drive and it most likely has some kind of locking feature.
PS4 seems to have a 500GB user replaceable drive. No official reports that I have seen.
Expect both to be 2.5" drives.

As for external drives and 3rd party drives- that's anybody's guess. You''l have to wait for several months after release to find that out for sure.

EDIT- Xbone seems to have a user replaceable drive but it's a M$ drive, some kind of proprietary-ness to it (be it shape, case (like X360 s) or connection). Xbone can also have external drives and use them for regular internal uses (game installations, saving, etc)

This is exactly why i ditched Nvidia. I updated drivers before i went to bed and ran fur mark to see if i saw any performance increases / decreases. Woke up in the morning to find a nice BSOD. I had no idea what happened and figured it was a freak bug and got replacements. After running the test on the new card, i watched as my temps got close to 90 without the fan kicking in and i killed fur mark.

I am now an ATI guy, even if Nvidia puts out better cards more often than not. Although intel's graphics are starting to peek my interest with the addition of has well. Maybe something decent will come from them in the next few years.

    DAMN, I CAN'T CHOOSE OS!

Microsoft Windows sucks as dick with BSOD and heavy load at idle. Alot of viruses

Linux is free and awesome, but developers are very lazy and they don't port the games on Linux. (AND OPENSOURCE!)

OSX only works with Macintosh where is fucking expensive

    BSD hasn't alot of programs

AmigaOS v 4.6 is same as Mac and looks retro and not too many games. PowerPC!

    And some more!

My friend- I was in the same boat as you. I sat down for a night and thought about what I needed, and now I have the perfect system.

Windows 7 with Ad-Aware virus protection and real-time protection. So long as I don't do anything stupid I shouldn't have to worry about malware slowing down my system. I'm also gonna start taking full disk image backups of my OS.

Linux and OSX run in VMWare workstation virtual machines. If I want to play Sauerbraten I'll play the Windows client, and if I want to use CS6 I'll use the Windows version. All my storage is on a NAS, and everything works together.

You'll get there eventually- take a step back and think about what you want, if you spend most of your time on a PC for work or for play you'll reap the rewards.

    (Also- you could hackintosh it)

    ====

Onto the matter at hand, I'd have to agree with Kerberasky, I like console gaming but not for the gaming;) XBox one sounds way too restrictive, and BluAmnesiac might be right about buying whichever system feels good to use- but I think the best way to come up with an answer to the console vs PC question now is for people to try both.

yeah, exactly. I have a PC, it's hooked up to my TV, and I have Xbox and playstation controllers connected to it. After a few clicks, PC gaming is about the same experience as console gaming for me (except for games with lousy video/controller support - that's where consoles come in, theoretically it "just works", of course, in this generation, DRM gets in the way of this at times).

Who the fuck gets a virus these days really? I use MSE, Malware Bytes, AdBlock edge, noscript, (those two are firefox addons) and Comodo firewall and I never even get remotely bothered by malware anymore and the whole "bsod" is the most overblown thing in existance. What even is this "heavy load at idle" I'm running HD video, firefox with 5 tabs, programs running in the background and I'm getting 15% CPU Usage and maybe 2GB of Ram usage. And I only have 8GB's of RAM and an i5 2500k.

FYI: Skyrim running on Gentoo Linux 3 days after release. The whole "no games eheheheh," thing is a total joke.
