I tried it for shits and giggles too. Meh..seems like you just get slaughtered by people with better guns, since AFAIK there's some kind of system where you can get better ones for your loadout the more you play. I don't like that, since it emphasizes the amount of time you play rather than actual skill.

Having slept on it the PS4 isn't so bad after all.

Other than the up front cost of the system being relatively cheaper, consoles tend to draw less power too and if you are gaming all day every day the reduced impact on your wallet and the environment would be noticeable, though a low power system tends to have reduced performance.

The hardware is a little limp but PC gamers have high expectations. My 2 year old mid range GPU outclasses the PS4 performance quite easily, but the PS4 doesn't really need to run half as many effects so it doesn't need as much brute force.

On my PC I need the raw horsepower to run effects like MSAA etc because I notice the change quite easily given as I'm sat only a foot or two away from the screen. As soon as you take a few steps back from the screen, it becomes uneccessary as focusing on such minute details becomes somewhat difficult. Provided the developers used decent models, textures and a dash of FXAA at a respectable resolution, these games are going to look good when you're several feet away from the screen, no matter how big it is so it doesn't quite need as much grunt.

To me the big issue is there will be a larger cloud streaming market before the PS4 is retired. The OnLive service was pretty good for what is is before it went bust. Sony's acquisition of Gaikai will not only give them the potential to provide some form of backwards compatability, but when the PS4 begins to age and struggle to compete for graphical superiority, Gaikai could serve as a replacement platform to maintain a set visual quality and performance on end of life games. In which case, how much horsepower will the PS4 actually need just to put a picture on the screen? Not a lot and when the time comes to move to 4K its limited resources should be more than capable of cloud gaming at this standard.

The PS3's inclusion of Bluray was the trojan horse for HD in your living room. Gaikai is the PS4's trojan horse for 4K.

I've got a mate who refuses to buy current gen. systems (current at any given time, I mean, not just now), he's currently loving the PS2 and Gamecube (He hasn't bothered with an XBox 1 yet, but I think he'll crack, as there are so many great games there too, especially ones that otherwise are only available on the PC, which he doesn't tend to play on), though his favourite systems are the Saturn and the Megadrive (Genesis). He says it's not from any "I won't support modern games companies" type ethics, and I know he's not stingy, he just loves retro-gaming. I love retro-gaming too, but I wouldn't want to be without this generations best games, such as the two Batman: Arkham games, Bioshock 1 and 2, Singularity, LittleBigPlanet (not properly played LBP2 yet, but what I have seems good), Portal 2, Saboteur, Halo 3, 4, and Reach (not too bothered about ODST), etc.

BTW, Sonicdude, did you ever get around to installing emulators and stuff on your XBox 1? You should, it's great, unless you also keep a PC plugged into the TV, in which case you can use that and sacrifice the slightly more ease of use of the XBox (i.e. you just need to use the joypad for all actions, including loading an emulator from the XBox's boot menu, and reseting the XBox), for the advantages of being able to emulate systems on the PC that the XBox can't (i.e. PS2, Gamecube, Wii, Saturn, etc, and the N64 emulators on the PC are better than on the XBox, though sadly N64 emulation is still way behind the real console).

No, people need to realise that power (graphical and CPU) are not nearly as important as gameplay and in-game features, and stop being so wrapped up in the "My machine has higher numbers [that most of us don't understand anyway] in it's CPU/GFX name than yours". There are classic games on most systems, from all points in the past few decades, and they are classics because of their gameplay, not because of their graphics or that they were the first game to have hidden line removal, or texture mapped bakgrounds, or reflective surfaces, etc.

I don't agree with gaming machine brand loyalty, I only buy consoles that have the games I want. It's true that my favourite consoles of this and the last generations have been the XBoxes, but only the XBox 1 was a clear winner for me, as I think the XBox 360 is almost interchangeable with the PS3, as most of the best games are on both machines anyway, this generation, whereas the XBox 1 had many great games that weren't on the PS2 (or Gamecube), such as Half-Life 2, Halo 1 and 2, Thief 3, Deus Ex: Invisible War, Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath, Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2, Elderscrolls 3: Morrowind, Unreal Championship 2, Breakdown, etc. Many of these were on the PC, true, but all else being equal, I prefer to game on a console rather than a PC.

Japanese releases in the west are the selling point for me. If that doesn't happen it's not going to be too great.

For me, when games started needing updates.... game consoles were finished. I mean, come on... is PS3/XBOX 360 a PC with Windows Update or a gaming console?

I will never understand, why people bash other people for what they play on.. PC players bash console players, PS players bash Xbox, etc etc.. aren't we all just gamers in the end? Who cares what people prefer to play on. The real winners are the ones that aren't fanboys and are smart enough to play games on every platform (their exclusives anyways).

Its like we gamers have created racism in our own community...

It makes me kinda sad and kinda ashamed to be a PC gamer and see PC "elitist" bash on consoles and the people that play them. As if they are committing a crime.

PS: I am not pointing fingers at any one here specifically its just My opinion.

While I agree, especially ones that need the Day 1 updates.. The ones that get updated months after or so to fix game problems or to balance the games out. I have no problem with. There are a few games on the ps2 and ps1 and other consoles that could have easily used updates to fix things.

Pc games have required updates constantly a lot longer then consoles started to do them.

You must just be really shit at the game then. My first time playing any Call of Duty game online I finished 26-8 or something with Iron sites against guys who were fully prestiged.

i agree partially but the reason there is minimal cross platform multi player eg xbox360 / ps3 / PC players all in the same server is because the console gamers would get beat with their own severed limbs (digitally speaking) in most cases due to the vast superiority and advantage the PC Gamers have with their systems and control methods / choices and also communication wise PC platform offers far more choice, 3rd party server support etc.

harsh fact, i'd love for true multi platform integrated Gaming but consoles need to play catchup

just my opinion, i game both on consoles old and new and on PC

Or it may have had something to do with the fact that I had some useless SMG while the others had good weapons...every time I managed to get a dead guy's gun I did a lot better. Imagine that.

Agreed, which is why the PC always wins for me. The ability to mod almost every PC game ever (official or not) = plenty more features and extended game play.

Yeah except the only things people usually care about when it comes to next is "Graphics" but at all other times, people get bashed for caring about graphics. Hm..

And if people ACTUALLY cared about gameplay, then the Wii U wouldn't be hated on and bashed every second.

Because it's already far beyond proven it's all about the gameplay.

I hope gameplay improves next gen, This gen felt like a bunch of cut scenes between easy gameplay segments. I hope we finally get to ya know PLAY GAMES again.

PC has cave story. There for I need no other new systems. only way I will get a PS4 is for another CS Remake that actually has the unused story elements from the original. Or when I see some cool JRPG's come out on it :p

Not all games have to be the same.

I prefer games to have more involved stories personally. Scripted events? So what. It's still better than being stuck in the dumb era of FPS games where depth of gameplay existed of:

    1. Find the secrets!
    2. Get a high score!
    3. Find all the Keys!
    4. Beat the episodes yeah!

There are still plenty of games out there that don't have involved stories and don't feature scripted events.

Yet people only complain about the ones that do.

    Hilarious.
