I know Sony recently released Vita Firmware update 3.36 and the Vita needs a lot more loving than the PSP about now.

But surely one game wouldn't require a firmware patch to run especially after 3 or so years after the last one.

Something seems odd about the whole PSP resurrection thing to me.

Why you guys don't like the PSP? I don't think the Nintendo DS is any better! Plus PSP will always be the best no matter what ya say!! The handheld to me is like a portable dreamcast.

For all it's comparison against DS. He did not say PSP was THE best just one of them. As is, there is a good chance world wide the PSP will still have sold more units then the 3DS. Which will keep making it the 2nd best selling gaming portable system.

Anyways I'm guessing to curb recent vita hacking they probably made some large changes to the PSP core which is why the PSP it self is getting an update. I do wonder if in this update they pulled the PSN store icon as that service shut down for psp not long ago.

That sounds about possible to why they decided to update a PSP Firmware

Some people here forget that is my opinion about the PSP. Yes I do find PSP best and successful apart from Umd format.

PSVita released a update yesterday. It could be to do with an exploit of some kind. Like, hacking a psp game and then transferring it to vita, maybe? I dont know how that stuff works, but they must be related. It could also be fixing the damage that was done during the last DDOS. That is my guess...

It would be nice if the update addressed the problem that some PSPs are not able to recognise the higher level of security in wireless networks... like mine.

^This I love the PSP to death because of its numerous features (especially the internet browsing ability) but one thing that I don't like is the fact the system doesn't support WPA-2 internet security or at least the PSP-1000 and PSP-2000 (which is what I have) models don't, so unless this recent update specifically fixes this problem, I don't see any real reason in wasting my time getting it, not only that but unless Sony is going to start making or releasing new games again, then what's the friggen point in releasing an update at all aside from newer interenet security?

Its still dead, it doesnt improve a thing.

The only good firmware releases of PSP were the 2.0 (American Release) and 3.0 (Pops emulator).

If you mean custom firmware itself for PSP... then definitely not.

I read a different article concerning the 6.61 update for the PSP. Seems like its Japan only right now. I might check the Sony support website in america and see if the update is being hosted.

EDIT: It seems to be hosting on USA servers. I downloaded the EBOOT.PBP file and it just finished updating. Unfortunately, CFG no longer works. And now we wait for the PSP homebrew community to resurrect itself...

I'm not exactly sure what they did with this update, but personally I think it's good to see the PSP get a little love.

I didn't know that they shut down the PSN Store for it, why would they do that when they could be getting some sales? Does that mean the PSN Store is down for the UMD-less PSP Go??

I wonder if the CFW makers will jump on making 6.61 CFW, assuming this update will ruin any mods you have on it.

The PSN Store for PSP is fine. Its possibly for this game that came out recently which is some RPG that was released in Japan in 2009 and just got recently translated. As for the fixes, its just bug fixes. Oh and they didnt add WPA2. Damn it...

To clarify my earlier post, I wasn't inferring that the PSP is a bad system, on the contrary I think it's one of the best pieces of gaming hardware ever made.

I personally own a mint 1000 phat and a lovely pearl white Go, both of which get played regularly. If you're an RPG fan you actually have to buy a PSP, if only for the FFIV complete collection.

I also love the near perfect PS1 emulation, pretty decent SNES emulation and very good CPS1/2 and AVS emulators for the platform.

I like the DS too, and own a Phat and an XL, but they see way less use than my PSPs.

When I saw the thread title I thought it'd be a new hardware revision for the Vita but eh, there must have been something patched for security's sake.
