So today Sony announced a new hardware: PS Vita TV. A $99 dollar small box that plays Vita, PSP and PS1 games, movies (Hulu, Netflix,...) and remote play with the PS4. I think it's a very interesting idea, specially aimed against AppleTV and Ouya. By the way, it's just me or Sony's ads are really improving? Just watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWplhhktgqs It's still full of "happy people", but the pacing and remote play concept is really cool.
It's interesting, I was expecting them to do a cheap PS3 that did it but going with the Vita will probably work better for them.
the Vita TV seems a nice piece of kit i wouldnt mind having one, and i am by far not a sony gamer or fanboy i still dont own a ps3 lol
The Vita is a brilliant system, just horribly under supported. I have a huge amount of affection for the PSP too and there are plenty PS1 games I'd like to revisit. So for me this seems like a really good idea. I've been wanting to get a PSP GO and hook it up to my TV for a long time now, this could be a much better solution. I just hope the price point stays down and I can get it to work with HDCP over DVI.
Gamesradar nice analysis: http://www.gamesradar.com/why-ps-vita-tv-could-be-sonys-smartest-piece-hardware-years/ Interest part of it: PS Vita TV really opens up the possibility for what Sony can achieve through its network of multimedia devices and partners. It’s a device that not only boosts the appeal of PS Vita, and brings the portable closer together with PS4; it also makes your PlayStation games and subscriptions (like PS Plus--you could use Vita TV to play free PS+ Vita games, without owning a Vita) more valuable. PS Vita games become even more essential travel companions and, crucially, the Vita brand gets even more attractive to big developers again. Which means more delicious games. By the way, here are the prices: Vita TV 1GB $100 Vita TV 1GB + 8GB + dualshock 3 controller $150 No release dates for us / south america / europe for now, but this must be released worldwide.
I think most people will need HDMI switchers very soon. For example, my TV has 4 HDMI ports: HDMI 1 - PS3 HDMI 2 - Satellite TV HDMI 3 - WDTV Live G3 HDMI 4 - Blu-Ray And most TVs today have 3 or even just 2 HDMI ports. At this point, 6 or even 8 should be the standard.
This should hopefully bring more developers to the Vita which it desperately needs. Reminds me of the Super Gameboy for the Snes or the gameboy advance player for GC.
So... this will play PS Vita games no a big screen and you won't need your original Ps Vita for it? Or am I reading it wrong? If so.. it's time to sell my vita. I hate small screens. EDIT: How does motion sensor games, like Uncharted will work with a dual shock 3?
Apparently it comes with a Dual Shock 3 because it will be released late this year in Japan, and they'll only get the PS4 in February 2014. IMO, the international relase of this will have a Dual Shock 4, making motion sensor games playable from the start. Honestly i was a bit hesitant on buying a Vita just for Killzone Mercenary, but now i think i'll take the risk. This PSVita TV might be the incentive devs needed to develop more games, plus remote playing looks interesting on the PS4 too. With the new PSVita version going LCD, i think i'll just get the current OLED version.
So, this is a consolized Vita? At that low price there is even less of a reason for me to pick up the actual handheld hardware. Maybe I'll get this.
They shouda called it the PlayStation TVita. If the price carrys over to around £85 with my favourite media partners then I will buy instantly any more and I think about it then buy:smile-new:
Well Sony, you did it. I have always prefered other company hardware first - I bought an N64, THEN a Playstation. I bought a Gamecube, then an Xbox, then another Xbox for multiplayer Haloness, THEN a PS2. I bought a Wii, Xbox 360, and THEN a PS3. I bought a DS, DS Lite, THEN a PSP. I always waited until there was a MUST HAVE exclusive, and bought your hardware for the software. But you've done it - you finally have made hardware I want. Congratulations Sony - it's taken 18 years, but you did it. You finally got me.
Motion Controls are built into the DualShock3 so that won't be an issue; it's the touchscreen controls that will be the problem for most of them (they say they'll patch all games that require them... but I'm not sure devs will go for that).
