    Heh,

I had a spare unit that was unmodded so i thought that i can try to mod it.
First the pic that i used to solder the chip

    http://i.imgur.com/cTbHoet.jpg

Well my soldering skills are "basic" so when i tried to solder on the resistors (point 3) i made a nice bridge between the two top by adding to much solder.
I thought ok no worries i have my pump i will remove the extra solder which i did but while trying to solder the wire i moved the resistor and was stuck with the one below.
Mieh, i can fix it, so i tried to separate them, and presto both resistors completely off the board.

Frustated by the mess i tried to make the solder on point 2, again too much solder and presto three legs on a nice bridge!

Ok, i know tragic but i have to learn :p

Well, i made a brake to relax and got back with my pump. Removed the extra solder from the chip. Some solder was stuck between the two first legs.
Got myself a cable and while heating the two legs and i removed the extra solder by putting the thin cables between the two legs.

Also i got the two resistors and solder them back on their original pads. It doesn't look pro, but i think they are ok.

So i reassemble the unit and try it to see if it works.
Presto, the unit works and boots fine a backup that i had.

The question is what are the three resistors on the top right corner (point 3), what is the chip next to them (point 2).
I ask because i am afraid that i might have problems in the future and i want to know what to expect.

If you don't use the right tool you will never learn anything ;)
Don't use solder pump but solder wick with the help of flux... I hope it helps.

P.S.: you can also use common carbon film resistors if yo have problems with SMD soldering...

Actually my pump is a solder 40w iron with a hole and a little pump over the iron, i think for nice solder blobs is the right tool but for tiny solder between chip legs the wick is a must have, i will go and buy.
What wick you suggest in mm, i saw that there are 0.32 and 0.50.

Also can you give more info on the carbon film resistors?

The chip is the MCU that controls the CD drive - commonly referred to a "mechacon" (a Sony term for "mechanism control") - the 3 resistors carry the command signals from the MCU to the CD controller chip.

If the machine is working, then they must be connected OK, since the CD subsystem would be completely nonfunctional if they weren't.

If you'd like to to use through hole resistors, here is what you need:

    http://www.digikey.gr/product-detail/en/CF14JT22R0/CF14JT22R0CT-ND/1830311

Of course, you can get the resistors elsewhere, just search for "1/4w Carbon Film 22ohm" and you should get what you need. Just to be sure, get ones with 5% (Standard Tolerance i believe) tolerance or lower.

0603 (1608) resistors can be hard to if you don't have the skills and/or stuff to do it. 0603's were a pain when i was a making a N64 DAC. i would probably take master991's advice and just use a through hole one :).

If you want to take up on doing the SMD resistors though, i would pick up this resistor:

    http://www.digikey.gr/product-detail/en/MCT06030C2209FP500/MCT0603-22.0-CFCT-ND/2607895

I would go with 0.5mm for desoldering braid.

One time that same resistor came off for me and I tried booting it anyways for the heck of it, the CD will spin like crazy if it's not there (or did for me at least).

Exact same thing happened to me, but on a PSOne, laser eye jumped around all over the place too, making awful noises. I actually managed to drop the resistor on the carpet - gone forever - that console went in the garbage, to my shame.

Thanks trimesh and zero for the tips, the funny thing is that the other solder point that is again on a resistor, i did it like a pro, perfectly smooth.
Any tips for soldering on such tiny spaces? Well from my bad experience the first thing is thinner solder, also i will try to find thinner soldering tip as it was bigger that the point that i was soldering.

I found that if you bridge the spot with a wire instead of the resistor, it will still work. Probably not ideal, but it works. I tried that before I replaced the resistor.

First off you need some better equipment:
    http://www.assemblergames.com/forum...gion-Free-BIOS&p=779058&viewfull=1#post779058

then you can get some nice thin soldering iron tips that are pretty universal for these soldering stations and you could easily solder 0.5mm points with ease. You could also just place the resistors back where they were then use the hot air to reheat the solder and they will go back into place.

Heh, i have it on my buying list, i saw a review on eevblog and the mate there was saying good things about this unit. But because i do as a hobby i don't have this kind of money to get it here (Greece).
