Dear Assembler members, I recently acquired a PSX from Japan to mostly play shooters: TFVI and Gradius V for the moment, so far it works like a charm except with one game ... Kaido Battle 2: Chain Reaction. The game boots no problem, intro movie plays fine, however when I press Start nothing happens :-( the game carries on with presentations and demos, I'm a bit, how I can say... surprised, the Start button works with every other games and the XMB. Any ideas? Similar experiences? Do I need to apply an update on the unit? If so where can I get it? Help?
I tried that and every other buttons, nothing happens. It's really odd... My controller and Memory Card are PAL but that shouldn't make a difference?
Just tried now, if I start the game without Mem Card then I can't get past the section where it asks for a mem card OH: controls are completely disabled. Bit of a catch 22... no mem card no controls at all, with mem card it boots but can't start a game... :banghead: At least I can play TFVI and Gradius V but still it's the weirdest situation I've ever had on a console... ok maybe playing Crackdown on 360 with no textures was pretty weird already...
If I remember correctly ps2 mem cards are region coded. Stupid question, but do you have a psone or a ps2 mem card in?
Oups that I didn't know, it's strange because the other games seem to be quite happy with the PAL mem card. The mem card is an official 8 meg PS2 card.
i've never heard anything about this only thing that pops in mind for now could be the configuration file that's generated based on console region. all my cards work on all my games too, so far atleast.
The PSX is not compatible with 100% of PS2 games, though as unclejun says there are firmware updates that fix some of the problem games.
Ah ok. Where the memory card idea came from I don't remember. I think I was thinking about the ps2 mem card with the dvd drivers.
Thanks for the help guys, it might be a compatibility issue then, the mem card was second hand and contained a config file from a regular PAL PS2 I erased everything but that didn't change anything... Any idea where I could get some updated firmware? Was the machine upgradeable via the net like the PS3 or was it via discs only?
You have to burn the firmware update to CD or DVD I think... or maybe you have to order the disc. I am not sure the broadband update mode still works. http://www.psx.sony.co.jp/support/upgrade_info.html That is your link to PSX firmwares. You want https://cgi.sonydrive.jp/psx/support2/upgrade_cd_form.html, but maybe some kind soul here can translate it for you. Here is a link to the manual (in Japanese): http://www.sony.jp/ServiceArea/impdf/pdf/2159504011.pdf
I don't see why the online update wouldn't work anymore, so try it first. If it fails, you'll have to order a disc through someone in Japan or buy one on Yahoo auctions, there is one now, it's the version 1.31 wich I think is the latest for your model.
Thanks for the answers guys, it's very much appreciated, I will try the online update first and let you know how it went.
OK, online update is a no go, it connects to the net but I get an error 300 or something. Only one web service works now on this machine the Playstation NOW! So i need to order the disc now... :banghead:
