It's just a good cd player. If you think of the original cost, the first gen psx is a $299 cd player.
Well it has audio out sockets so it has slightly less hum from the video signal on the other playstations, but other then that er no.
I guess only audiophile music addicts will notice the difference though. The obvious advantage about it is that you get a really brilliant CD player for almost no money. Audiophiles pimp it with gold connectors ect.
I didn't believe it either but did some research, and sure enough there was a cluster of audiophiles talking about replacing their $6k CDPs with SCPH-1001s. EDIT: the truth may or may not be found within the 87 pages of this thread http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=31123 Buggered if I'm reading through all that, mind.
There was also the Hong Kong only VCD version in a white casing with white controller. It was 220vac. I've seen 2 or 3 of them for sale in all the time I have been into Playstation stuff. ** Edit ** This post seems stupid now as the VCD one has already been mentioned by Kev. I swear none of those posts existed until I posted my responses, then a pile of old posts magically appeared. This used to happen to me a lot on AG...
Not sure if they are the rarest, or just hard to obtain because people who own them rarely sell them, but the 'Automobile' colour range of PS2 are amazing!
It came up in the ASSEMbler user marketplace eBay discussions as well: http://cgi.ebay.com/PLAYSTATION-SCPH-5903-VIDEO-CD-VERSION-VCD-LIMITED-CIN_W0QQitemZ220319714355QQihZ012QQcategoryZ48752Q QcmdZViewItem
Is this a SCPH-1001?...It does not have RCA jacks on the backside. It looks like your 'standard' model, but they tapped the audio signal from elsewhere (obviously not from the standard plug) and different power supply.
http://www.assemblergames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14762&highlight=SCPH-1001 Huge discussion about the PS1 as a hi end cd player here.
With that weird CD platter on it, it actually looks like a reel to reel tape recorder. Not exactly the best looking version of PSx CD player I have seen, however if it's the 1001 that is 'claimed' to be so wonderful, why bother with all that upgrading on a 5000+ model? Seems like someone missed the point! :katamari:
Send me a few dozen, I got quite far RE'ing the CD path on the PU-8 motherboard (the ones used in the 100x models) in a project to replace it with an SD card but got stuck on not actually having a working unit
