I'd like some to if you're handing them out. ;)

When I fix the drive on this SCPH-1001 I have I'll try out comparing the PSOne versus the 1001 with CD playback. I doubt I'll notice much if any difference that I could call good or bad.

Damn, I knew I should have bought one of the many dirt-cheap junked SCPH-1000's I saw at the thrift stores in Japan. Dunno what I was thinking, as it's not like PSXs are hard to fix if those units were broken at all. Not only would I have gotten RCA jacks and S-Video output, and the ability to play any region (via the CD-player bug), I could have possibly gotten audiophile-quality sound too. But not for music CDs; it would have been great for SotN!

If you wanted to play any region of game you should get a modchip. Swap tricks suck. The one you speak of is incompatible with games that have redbook audio tracks. I can see the appeal of RCA/Phono audio jacks and the supposively better sound output, but not really so much with the S-Video. It's not like you get lower quality S-Video from the multi av cable. Ofcourse it's also because I've seen the light and it's RGB colored. :p

Also I believe that SCPH-1001s also have the CD player bug where you can use it as an easy swap trick platform. I haven't tested myself though, I just went right ahead and put a modchip in mine.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Net Yaroze edition of PSX. That's pretty rare. As far as I know the only piece of hardware (sold to the general public) to have a DTL model number.

It was expensive in its day!! Around £550 if I remember rightly.....ouch! It's my favourite type of "retail" PSX.

    Good Point Dickibow,

You wouldn't have link to a pic of 1 of those would you? :eek:h:

I would be interested in seeing one, even though someone here doesn't think there rare. I'am a little bit surprised to hear there not rare.

    Later Dickibow!

Why is it your favorite? It'll play any region disc I hear, and it's an ugly black. Cheap PS1 + 2$ chip is the same thing. You can buy paint if you want it to be black.

Yeah, but then you won't get the funky velvet-ish texture...

(from what I've heard, never actually felt one)

Why is it my favourite? Lots of reasons:

    1. It's pretty damn rare as it wasn't sold in stores and you had to buy direct from Sony. How many people (apart from forum members do you know with one)?

    2. It's black

    3. It has an awesome weird texture. Not shiny smooth plastic like a normal playstation but a velvety matt texture with matching coloured controllers.

    4. It is a multi-region console

    5. Plays homebrew PSX games coded on Net Yaroze machines. Not just yours but ones that other people coded (if you haven't lost your access card ;-)). You could share them using the Net Yaroze website (which is still around actually)!

    6. The only PlayStation hardware sold to the general public with a DTL model number. Yes, I know a chipped playstation will do the same thing but. Same as a chipped PS2 will do the same stuff (if not more) than a debug PS2 but it's not the same as owning the real thing.

    7. It came with it's own "mini" PlayStation SDK

    8. You could code your own games on it and download loads of demos from the NetYaroze website. It was also seen as a way into the "games developing" industry. If you did a cool Net Yaroze game, it looked great on the CV!

I've uploaded one of my pics. You can make out the colour really well. The flash on the camera has made the colour appear a little lighter than it looks in the flesh but you get the idea. Actually it's not black....it's dark grey!

5 and 8 are the same, aren't they?
And you're right, it looks better than the "soviet grey" of the retail units, and even better than the blue units...

Well see I'd personally prefer the Blue Debugger color and shine to it. The Yaroze looks grainy/rough. The other thing is I'd prefer it to actually be black rather than Gray. It's still a neat system for sure. But if you just want to play imports or backups or make homebrew, you don't need that system.

I sure hope you're being sceptical? Hearing sound quality through a youtube video? :p

Yeah, you can't tell from a Youtube Video. addding '&fmt=18' to the end of the URL to make it higher quality, it still sounds pants since his camera is a bit suckage.

maybe the psx SCPH-1001 is not on par with $6000 equipment; BUT it does not sound cheap either!
