I was wondering what is the rarest game ever made that there is 1 known copy ever made and its just somewhere floating around in a flea market or on the internet
In my opinion, the most rarest video game can be the game that wasn't released. Game, which you can't buy + public release of any files did not happen. Only one copy on old backup server in the company. And one or two screenshots on public.
I know this is unrelated, but I just so happen to recognise that Samus artwork. A fan of the artist, Hex?
It's very hard to tell. You have to take many thing is mind. Was the game publicly released ? What region was the game released for ? Was it digital or physical ? Was it available in stores or only through mail, or contests, etc. ? Is it a standart release or limited edition ? I would say that the rarest publicly released game would be Air Raid for the Atari 2600, but that's not necessarily the case.
Like the others have said, you need to be more specific. Is it in general? For a specific console? Was it publicly released? You get the point. Setting that to the side, I think it would be Campus Challenge 1991 for NES. Sorta like Nintendo World Championship but it was meant for several colleges and universities. There was Mario 3, Dr. Mario, and Pinbot on the cart iirc. Only 1 exists as the rest were either brought back to Nintendo or were destroyed. Then there is the only Genesis Tetris cart signed by Mr. Pajitnov himself but that isn't as rare as Campus Challenge...
I guess the most popular rare game and was only in a competition was NWC. When someone starts collecting they hear of that game. I heard one time that someone found one in there basement. It was recent actually and they have every single one recorded almost.
Perhaps a more accurate question would be, what is the most rarest game ever released that had an official wide release? Maybe something like Stadium Events, or some obscure mail away game that only worked with a custom modem or online network?
Sort of. But there was only 10 copies or so released. Something about production starting then ending immediately or something. I'm still leaning with Campus Challenge.
Was Campus Challenge available for purchase? That is, if any Joe-nobody wanted one, could they obtain one at the time? I would like to think that this would be a benchmark of it being "avaliable" to the public.
No. It wasn't. You can look at pictures online for that supposedly single copy. But for repros yes siree!
for me it has to be soemthing with a back story which adds a little mystery and excitement when it comes to rare games. i'm not talking about games which had a commericial release but in few quantities either. for me it's more about prototype games and even then not so much early beta's of released games but cancelled games, and if the game is fully playable to the point that the player can complete it then thats a great find. the game that always comes to mind in such discussions is daffy duck for the c64. the game was supposed to have been finished and some copies were made but then the game was cancelled. and there is a legend that 200 or so copies got delivered to uk retailer w.h smith and more than likely those copies were sold. the idea smeone may come across this cassete game in an old box of tapes or in storage someday is an exciting prospect. at one point some collectors got in touch with one of the guys who developed the game and he said that he may have a copy of the game somewhere in storage and will have a proper look one day so maybe we will see this game preserved and released online one day.
Isn't odd that SuperMan 64 is now very hard to find ? A few years ago it was cheap and you could get it easily. Maybe people shouldn't film themselves destroying the game.
