The local game store that I go to pretty often almost always has several copies of that game. It's not expensive, but I have no desire to own it.

On Ebay UK, there are vey few listings now. A few years ago it was a lot more common. But that was before 2012-2013 when everyone started to buy N64 stuff and the price rised for all n64 stuff.

N64 stuff is just far too expensive now, but you're in that point. Some games are barely listed now.

I can't really find any Vigilante 8 copies complete. I sourced all mine from the UK years ago.

I got my 1st N64 in 2011 for christmas used. However it broke when a power outage occured. I got my second one in 2013-2014 and they were much more expensive now then they were back then.

For argument's sake ... how about a game that was developed, approved, manufactured, and shipped to stores ... and then the weekend before release, a legal sh*tstorm looms on the horizon. All copies are recalled (at great expense) and destroyed ... and a new version is hurriedly prepared, approved, manufactured and released (within a 3 week period), and goes on to sell over 1,000,000 copies.

So the final retail game isn't particularly rare at all ... but the version that got recalled ... who would have a copy of that? The console manufacturers probably still have the production-test-discs (as they're not directly connected to the publisher), and maybe the people who oversaw the destruction have a few squirreled away.

Would that count as both rare and exciting?

The first? I forget. The second? I'd say... $75 total with an indigo Gamecube.

It's rare? I've never had a big problem finding them, I think I got mine for like $4? At least it doesn't have a website devoted to destroying every last copy or anything.

I can't think of any that were pulled right before release. Kakuto Chojin was pulled like 6 months after release for having a Koran verse in the background of a stage.

Though, the opposite might be even rarer. The N64 game Turok: Rage Wars had a bug that made the two player mode unbeatable, so Acclaim offered an exchange for a fixed version. The non-patched one has a black cart (as Turok 2 and 3 both did), while the patched one is grey. Supposedly it's quite rare, as many people either didn't know about the bug, or didn't get it replaced. (EDIT: I forgot to mention it's only the NTSC carts that have this, the PAL version was released with grey carts from the get-go)

I know Zelda:OOT was sorta similar due to having a mayan chant in the fire temple and the fact that ganon's blood was red. The both were fixed on the rev 1.2. All PAL carts were 1.2 iirc and all japanese carts were 1.0. In America, all of the gold carts and some grey were 1.0 whereas the rest of the greys were 1.1 or 1.2's. The swordless glitch was also exclusive to 1.0 as was a super bright N64 logo.

How about Sim City for the NES, there's pictures of the game and the cart. So at least one exists.

There are some single digit known copies of 2600 stuff, so I'd probably point a finger that way.

For more modern stuff, I think Outback Joey should be in the conversation.

I've seen cartridges of SM64 go for +$35, despite the fact it was the highest selling N64 game. Almost anything first-party Nintendo software goes for overinflated prices. Mario Kart:DD!! regular copy without the day-one bonus disc is upwards of $50, as is Luigi's Mansion.

But this topic might be a tad bit vague. Maybe covering it by console or year would be better. Also its hard to objectively answer this question, as a reference point is hard to establish for something this ambiguous.

What could be the rarest console ever? I'm putting my bet on an obscure late 70s or early 80s cartridge based system that didn't have any marketing and had an extremely short production.

I remember seeing SM64's for that much on Amazon back when I got my SM64. Also the MK:DD and the LM prices are just completely insane. Thank god I already got them when I got my original GC in 2006.

Probably some rare Russian or Korean Pong console from the 70's/80's. Maybe the Sony CD-i's or those Bang & Olufsen CD-i TV's if those count.

My guess would be the Halcyon. It cost over $2000 in 1985, and the company went bankrupt later that year. Only two games were released for it, and at the moment there is a grand total of 1 on eBay (for a cool discount of a thousand dollars!). My guess would be that there's under 100 out there, maybe under 20. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halcyon_(console)

I'm not sure but considering that the rarest game console being the RDI Halcyon(supposedly 10 made) I would say any game made for that system. Again I am not sure.
