Remember when we had reasons to own one system over another?

Aside from the 360 being heaven for the Retro gamer is there really any reason to own it over a PS3? Is there really any reason to own a PS3 over a 360?

Every game comes out on both platforms now just about aside from a few companies too lazy to make games for both (or they just can't afford to)

I was thinking back to the 16 bit days when even multiplatform games were radically different. You had the SNES and it's constant redefinine of what games could be and what they could look like and that Hardware was pushed past it's limits. Then you had the Mega Drive which used an ancient 68000 processor and soundchip but the The games had an edge to them that the SNES/SFC games did not have, Back then you had Streets of Rage, Sonic, EA games were better on the Mega Drive ect But where sega needed add ons Nintendo was being crafty and adding things into the carts themselves plus while not the first of their kind you did have Star Fox, and
Stunt race FX, Yoshi's Island STILL looks and plays amazingly and so on.

Back then you had arguments for both.

These days we take it for granted we can get any game we want at any time and just boot it up on our computers but back then games didn't grow on trees and it was very rare for people to have more than one console in the home.

If anyone can remember I'd like to know some arguments you used to have for one system over another.

Obviously there isn't that much of a technological uniqueness anymore for either console. I'm fine with that, it's unrealistic to expect major exclusive hardware advantages these days anyway. Companies focus on software differentiation and it works quite well I think.

I never really cared for an argument of one system over another much in the past as I owned several systems for several reasons and yeah one of those reasons was exclusives, but if you'd also like an argument the platform of choice for the current generation IMO it is PC which wins out.

These days games are multiplatform. Yeah not all console games are on PC and those that are are ported, but when they make it to PC you can usually run them at a higher resolution/AA/AF level than the consoles ever could and without any of the slowdown some consoles experience too. In some cases the games also support 3d vision when their console version does not.

A keyboard and mouse is the natural staple of many PC games but since 2006 the Xbox 360 wired controller hasn't really changed that, but it has supplemented it and I prefer to use my pad on my PC whenever it is practical to do so. Due to the aforementioned porting of console games the controller is fully integrated into the games too showing the icons for promts etc as you would expect.

A PC is also easier to repair or replace parts yourself unlike the Xbox 360 RROD or the PlayStation 3 YLOD and with OnLive or other cloud gaming service your PC can suck and still play games @ 720p NP.

Lastly with games aside and the ease of emulation without having to jailbreak etc, lets not forget your PC is also a gateway to many forms of media (which are not all pornographic but yeah 99% of it is) and the games are usually cheaper (though the system costs more) it is a win-win situation.

Even then are the PS3 exclusives that special? Besides Little Big Planet? How are Resistance and Killzone any different than the 10,000 other FPSes?

To be fair and play the other side of the coin what exactly does the 360 have other than a ton of hardcore Shmups, and Great DLC games? Halo isn't that great only the first one really wows me. I think Gears of War is WAY overrated. I have no desire to play Fable. So that leaves us with what?

In the 16-bit days, there were always heated arguments over which console had the best sports and platformer games. Those were usually swayed by preference, though EA did make SEGA a good pit stop for football fans. Does anyone remember Mutant League? What was undeniable was the fact that SNES had superior hardware and the most comfortable controller. As for the Genesis, it had a larger variety of genres, many of which are hard to describe (ToeJam & Earl and Ecco the Dolphin come to mind). To this day, some of my friends still argue over who officially won the 16-bit console war, seeing how it was very close. I was one of the lucky ones to have had both consoles and didn't have to choose just one.

    I've got an xbox360 because:
-the ps3 lags more than the 360 on versus fighting games
-all the cave shmups get released on the xbox360

    Same reason I have a 360

You know what game was the SHIT on the Genesis? General Chaos, If Metal Slug was an RTS that would be it. OH and Strider was more or less arcade perfect.
The Genesis probably had the best port of Double Dragon too.

As for the controller I'm torn I was just holding a Genesis 6 button and it was heaven. I still to this day have no idea what the Mode Button is for.

Then fast forward to now and just about every controller is an evolution of the SNES pad

Uncharted is pretty damn awesome. It's basically the only reason I'm keeping my PS3, after that I think I'll sell it.

I had a 360 for a while and I must say I enjoyed it more than my PS3.

I'm trying to stay neutral dispite my exclusive 360 ownership.

There is one thing I noticed PS3 owners seem to be more of an Ass about the PS3 than 360 owners are.

Anyways I miss the old the days and that was the point, Imagine if message boards in their current form existed on the internet back in the 16 bit era?

Eh, I own every console from the last two gaming generations, and several of the ones before those.

Each console has it's pros and cons, so I enjoy them all to be perfectly honest. The 360's exclusive games are mainly rehashed FPS games with a monotonous story, same for a lot of the PS3 exclusives.

Although, I do like LBP, God of War, MGS4, etc. Halo hasn't really wowed me since Halo 2, which in my opinion, is what established Xbox Live as what it is today. How many people subscribed to XBL /just/ for Halo 2? I know I did, although there were other games I played online as well.

I agree that PS3 and Xbox 360 are too similar. I also agree that PC is superior to both. However no matter how great the hardware is, if publishers don't want to support it then it's kind of irrelevant.

There's a huge reason to choose a 360 over PS3 (well aside from the fact that it isn't a SONY product) and that is XBOX LIVE.

Apart from online there isnt much to seperate the two.

I mean it's up to personal preferance as both consoles have games that cater for each genre.

Gears of War and Halo vs Killzone & God of War

Lips vs Singstar vs we sing

    Forza vs Gran Turismo

    etc,

If some new genre appears and its sucessful expect to see a similar title on a rival console in the future like the wii paving the way with motion gaming now everyone has something similar.

Not much nowdays is true console exclusive as no doubt it will be ported in months or years time.

Xbox Live is great if you love to hear whiny preteens talking shit and insulting you for no reason.

I don't get this. I have both X360 and PS3, and on neither console am I bombarded with the level of 'talking shit and insulting' that people seem to associate with XBOX Live (or PSN).

I have exclusive games for both consoles, but there is no doubt that I play the 360 far more than the PS3.

For me; the 360 feels like a more professional platform. I also prefer the UI on the 360 than the PS3.

I never had the Playstation (1 or 2) when I was a kid. I had SEGAs, Nintendos, XBOX etc. Which is why I prefer the 360 controller to the PS3 controller (I don't get the same nostalgia as others I guess).

You know what I'm an idiot.

I forgot to mention Microsoft actually lets any asshole with a computer make games for the 360. XBOX live Indie games are probably the #1 best thing about the 360

the PS3 is better why all of its games have fit on a single disk ALWAYS
the 360 every big game requires at least 2 disks EPIC FAIL

PSN prices are what they say they are
on xboxLive you have points you think oh hey this DLC for Darth Vader for soul caliber 4 is only 300 ms points when in reality you just spent 10 bucks for a mediocre character that was already on the disk

also the PS3 has a 7 core cpu the 360 has a 3 core CPU

the 360 has already reached its limits the PS3 has yet to be fully pushed let alone reach its limits

a mediocre game like LA NOIRE brings the 360 to its graphical limit and looks like shit compared to the PS3 version
