Hello, I've been trying to find a replacement DVD drive for my 1.0 XBOX (It has a crappy Thomson) the drive wont read anything. Is there anywhere I can get a replacement drive for cheap?
Please don't bump your threads minutes after. If you continue after being warned twice, you'll be banned for a week. To answer your thread though; Another XBOX.
As others have said, your best bet is to buy a used XBox. And also mod the XBox, and put in a larger capacity hard drive, and that way you can install all of your XBox games onto the hard drive, and play them from there, which is much quicker and saves wear and tear on the DVD drive.
keron drive. its a modified samsung dvd rom drive with custom fw to read original disc... the yellow Drive power/stat cable needs either an adaptor or to be spliced into the drives control pcb.. not really worth it IMHO
There are afew drives that work with the Xbox but they all have to be modified to work. You can use a LG GDR-8163b, a LG GDR-8164b or a Samsung SD-616T. I think there were a few more that i forgot but it's worth it! They read every media you throw at them! At least every disc that i tested! If there is interest in stuff like this i could upload the tutorial how to mod them.
I have done this on one of my xbox consoles, it works perfect: http://www.talismoon.com/cgi-bin/version2/engine.pl?page=product-xbox-8164dvdadapter
That's the one! But trying to find that board will be hard. I haven't seen even a place that has them.
Sometimes its cheaper to buy another XBOX. When the Drive died on my xbox the replacements were $30 - $40 (You could buy another whole xbox for $40)
I uploaded all the tutorials i have. Most of them are in German but the LG GDR-8163B tutorial is in englisch. There should be englisch versions of the tutorials around. And maybe the pictures are enough for some users here. Well you at least get an idea of what is needed to get them to work! I can get these locally for 24eur , they are in stock but no idea how many are left , here are some pics of my installation, you need to cut some parts on the internal plastic piece that holds the drive/hdd (nothing serious and doesn't show)
you should buy a few and ship them out to others , i know id be interested in at least one of them maybe even two
