Not all betas binaries have that string in them though, so better backing up everything just in case. Even if you don't plan on sharing with us, do it for you at least!

wow - those Hex Workshop and R-Studio gimmicks are fantastic! Glad to have been introduced to them by you guys - thanks!

So, I gave it a good scan with R-Studio and got VERY excited when I started seeing all manner of files pop up inc jpegs and a load of other stuff, until I started recognising some of the damn files names.

Yep, looks like my main drive had another partition on it, and when I made the backup in Hex Workshop, I thought that was the drive.

SO - In Hex Workshop, no Katana / GD-M drive exists.

Having seen that other thread with the BIOS settings, I decided to check it out. (my D drive is still being found, as seen in my screen grab before).

Not really sure what I'm doing in the BIOS settings, but still no luck. But DA-CHECK still passes everything all fine on the left hand side, and can't read/write (again see screenshot) to the 'D' drive.

If I can't get Hex Workshop to see it, and the Create Image option is still greyed-out in R-Studio, so I have anything else left that I can try?

Guessing formatting in FAT32 then copying over a GD-Project to it would get it all working fine, but still I'd like to see if there's anyway I can get the data (if any) from the GD-M partition... because at this point, I've still not been able to prove there's nothing on it.

Only things I can think of to try is :
    - Proper BIOS setting - any dos' or don't
    - Buy R-Studio and hope that greyed-out icon becomes magically active
    - Make sure I've jammed the scsi terminators in the right places. Just have one in B right now. (GD Drive sat on top but not connected due to lack of cable!) ... what's the correct config? Do I jam the second into the extension port or is it for the GD writer?

Again, thanks for your help guys, and at least I'm having fun with all this! :D

The SCSI cable to your pc goes into SCSI-A, the terminator in SCSI-B.

I'll let other people answer about R-Studio & other readily available & recommended software to dump the hdd.

(If all else fails, I still have my own home-made dumper, but since it has never been tested besides me, is console-only, hardcoded for my pc set-up, and is quite slow, let's only consider that as solution of last resort)

Cool - I've got everything all set up perfectly now, in theory. My scsi id's were not matching the guide, so i changed them. But now when I boot it only sees one device, not two.. lol might not be an issue

Anyone fancy helping me out in real-time via FaceTime at all? :D I'd be happy to give you a little something for your efforts!

    Cheers

Thinking about it, the best thing to do I guess is buy another HDD that's suitable for the dev kit, then format it and have a working GD-M... can anyone recommend a drive other than the Seagate ST34520N? (It's crazy pricey for some reason!)

Then maybe I can get some scsi to something else adapter to hook the drive up to a mac/pc and try and get the data that way.

If you can afford to offer me an Ipad air, I will gladly help out via FaceTime :)

The best thing you can probably do right now is pop the hood of the Katana devkit itself and confirm what HDD you've actually got in there, if any, and that it's physically connected properly. Can you post the drive model number or take a picture of the drive label? The drive is located right at the top back of the Katana unit. Also, if you can place your hand on the top of the drive while the unit is powered up, and confirm if you feel a vibration from the drive platter spinning, that'd help too.

Here's the random drive that was jammed in the kit - it's a 36.4 HP 1000RPM SOB

Guessin' this is not what they originally shipped with!

Even if the picture ain't working I guess you're talking about the BIG RED BUTTON. I think it's a system reset button.

My next challenge to now get this Ultra SCSI HDD mounted on my iMac or PC somehow.

Maybe the PC is the best bet, as I don't think an ultraSCSI>USB thing exists.

I'm not too familiar with SCSI... If I've got that Adaptec card in my PC for the DevKit stuff, is there a connector I can use? Ultra scsi seems to be a different connecter

Yeah, ok, that's not the drive you'd usually expect to find in this thing :). I read that model as a HP BD03688272. Haven't been able to confirm the year they started manufacturing, but probably in 2005. I seriously doubt that drive is compatible with the Katana unit, but I could be wrong.

Ah, so even if I formatted it under windoze, it still might not work?

I've found a replacement on eBay that is also UltraScsi... are they all UltraScsi, or did someone just jam an adapter into my set?

I can't remember what the specs are on the original drive the unit had. I might have to open up my unit and see what's in there. I'm not very familiar with SCSI myself, the only SCSI gear I have was bought specifically to interface with the Katana.

Would be fantastic if you could - thanks dude. Interested to see what kind of drive is in there and if it's Ultra Scsi or not.

Yeah man, saw that- That's why I'm confused! The ST34520N looks like normal SCSI, where as mine seems to be UltraScsi. Weird, huh?

If you don't see the Katana drive, you could check if it is initialized in Disk management (press Win+R, type in diskmgmt.msc and hit Enter).
I presume you already have an raw disk file so nothing will be lost.
Initializing wont destroy the data luckily, there is one exception however : If you are asked to choose between GPT or MBR, there will be a chance you destroy some data(mainly the first few sectores)
If you had to initialze the disk, you could use Testdisk to recover the FAT tables that maybe damaged.

The drive you got there is indeed a ultrawide scsi drive that is connected to a SCSI-2 (50pin) adapter.

I could help you further with teamviewer if you wish :)

Thanks all - here's the latest!

So, new SCSI drive is in. Took a bit of messing to get it to show up, but it's appearing in windows now as 'removable drive'...

Now, I can't seem to format this SOB! Right click, format... the dialogue box just never appears.

The above advice got me to this screen... Also, I changed the drive letter to G:, and when I did, It said it needs to be formated before it can be used. Awesome, I thought... but then got this popup. Screenshot is of the two together... so it's not diskmgmt that threw up this message.

    ENqp2Ps.png

SO, how the hell do I format this thing, and get it up and running?
Needless to say maybe, but I've ofcause checked it's all plugged in correctly etc... Is there maybe a driver I need to install to make it appear as a normal fixed SCSI drive?

    Thanks!
