Can't you format from the adaptec 2940 scsi disk utilities menu? Provided it's detected properly on boot...

Ah, didn't know I could through that - is that the little Ctrl+A gimmic, or something else I should look out for?

Also, question for everyone here - should I be worried that my GD-Writer does not show up in the SCSI detect / boot list?

It's set to ID5 and has a terminator on its port 2/B. Not sure which way the little dip switches should be set though.

Now off my bang my head against a wall ! - Anyone got any ideas? perhaps it's the drive? Do only those smaller HDD's work?

You should partition it for 2gb fat, or 4gb fat32 ? I would use a linux utility cd to do the partition and format.

Thanks - I'll look into that ... so the fact that I can't format via the bios / get that error message is nothing to really worry about?

Also ASSEMbler - You'd know this one... What config to the dips need to be in on the GD-Writter unit? When I plug it straight into the card it displays fine, but looping thought the 'For GD Writer' scsi port makes it not show up in bios. Guessin those dips are the answer...

R_studio can find multiple times the same files using different techniques. At least you're sure not to have lost anything!

As for the noisy hdd, seems like a mechanically broken one. But you should ear opinions of others before giving up on it.

I know my dev unit's HDD makes a lot of noise compared to modern ones. I don't know what is normal and not normal for these HDD's though.
