Megadrive uses another FM chip. Master System games don't recognize it. In practice yes. Different cartridge shape. Western systems by default block games without a valid header. While arguably not used for intentional region lock on Master System, the Megadrive inherited its region settings from there. 50/60hz and English/Japanese do occur under Master System mode also.
So, in other words you can't play Japanese games on a US/PAL system? What about the opposite? Ignoring the cartridge shape.
If you buy a cartridge converter then yes, you can play Japanese games on a western Master System and Western games on a Japanese Master System. They sell the converters on Yahoo Auctions from time to time.
Tell me more! You've found a working converter to play Japanese games on a western Master System?? I've hired bad_ad84 to build a prototype of that idea (deemed "prototype" by me since I lack sufficient proof they exist) and we may need assistance.

WoW! I totally forgot about the Retro Core series... Hard to believe you are still churning it out after all these years...
Yeah, I know. I've taken a few rests over the years but something inside of me just wants to make them.
I've got a new Retro Core in production right now plus a "making of" which will feature my ugly mug on camera some more.
I've got Retrocade HD in the pipeline, I just ordered my new camera so the fun should begin soon and NO MORE will it be a Retrocore rip off. Looking forward to this making of though. Should be interesting.
The making isn't all that great in the way of showing games or hardware but more of the editing side of things. There is some hardware shown though.
I do everything on Windows Movie Maker I'd like to beable to do more though and the latest version removed system font.
I used to use Windows Live Movie Maker too but now I use TrakAxPC. Anyways, the new Retro Core Special is now on YouTube. It's best to watch it in 1080p if you can.
there's probably some decent open source software out there for video editing that would be more flexible then windows movie maker(not used or seen that since windows ME)
I'm sure there is but I don't use Windows movie maker anymore since I started using TrakAxPC. I'm a fat git like he is, that's for sure. I really need to get back out jogging. I got down to 82kg at one point and now back to 94kg. man, staying slim is hard work.
It's that time again, Retro Core 3 Volume 25 is on YouTube now with the official site download coming tomorrow.
