After seeing the show about the Ranma games, I decided to get one. I decided on the 3rd one (Chougi Ranbu Hen), because it seems to have the best graphics and it also has a lot more characters to choose from than the others. However, the games are so cheap that I'll probably end up getting them all at some point. I just wish my Super Famicom had RGB video quality as good as my SNES Jr.
Retro Core Volume 15 out now - More retro gaming that you may have forgotten all about in this weeks show including a look at Double Dragon on the Famicom / NES and Master System, Robocop for the Arcade, 4WD The Baja on the Super Famicom and Street Fighter 2 don the Master System takes pride of place in this weeks Shite of the Show. Oh, and something else keeps popping up. http://www.segagagadomain.com/RetroCorepage-main.htm http://www.youtube.com/user/Yakumo1975?feature=mhee Yakumo
Well, in this weeks show there's a good look at all 3 versions of Virtual racing for Sega consoles, some nice PC98 action with Rusty, Fighting Vipers 2 on the Dreamcast and XDR for the Mega Drive providing this show's shite. Oh, and some odd SFC scrolling beat'em up. Yakumo
How do you pick which games go in what show? For me I just use the wheel of random (actually I plan a theme and work the games around that theme)
I don't really have a system but if I read about something that I find interesting then I'll normally add it to the show. Othere than that it's pretty random. Yakumo
Nice show. I agree that the 32X version of Virtua Racing is a really good port. I disagree with you about it being one of the few good 32X games. The 32X had a very small library, but I think it had quite a few good games considering - Shadow Squadron, Virtua Racing, Virtua Fighter, Doom, etc. The 32X version of Doom had inferior graphics to the SNES version, but it had a really good soundtrack. I like the 32X version of Virtua Fighter better than the Saturn version even though it has a lower polygon count, simply because it is not nearly as buggy as the Saturn version. I used to own Knuckles Chaotix, but it's been so long since I've played it that honestly I couldn't say if it was a good game or not. I liked it at the time, though. I've heard Tempo is good as well. I got my first 32X for $20, when they were on clearance or whatever. Probably the best $20 I've ever spent - I loved that thing. At the time, it was a much more economical choice than buying a brand new system like a PSX or an N64.
Well, I'm away from home at the moment but that doesn't mean that there's no Retro Core. Nope, it certainly does not. So by the power of "cloud storage" as they now call it, I bring you Retro Core 3 Volume 17 made from videos taken thorough the last few months. So what can you expect to see in this new show? Well there's Night Slashes arcade game, Last Resort for the Neo Geo, Night Slave on the PC98, Renegade for the Master System, Rolling Thunder 2 on the Mega Drive and Tiny Toon Adventures for the Super Famicom. Retro Core 3 Vol:18 More classic Japanese PC gaming in this show thanks to the NEC PC98 game, Edge. There also loads of console goodies including a look at the Mega Drive and SFC versions of Arcus Odyssey back to back, Fighting Masters on the Mega Drive, The Simpson's Hit & Run for the XBOX, Judgment Silversword on the Wonder Swan and some arcade action from Sega's Racing Hero. It was quite a good episode. I think I do like the MD soundtrack for Arcus Odyssey more. I like the effect with the logo and the laser lights at the beginning of the show. That was a nice touch.
oh man, that laser light logo was such a pain in the arse to make. The biggest issue was making the see through Retro Core logo in a format the video software would like. I know where you are coming from with the MD soundtrack as well. There's just something about that Yamaha audio chip that's sounds so cool. That's not to say the Nintendo's SPC Sony audio chip is rubbish. Oh no, that can produce some very impressive sounds.
Another thing: when I saw that you were reviewing Hit and Run, for some reason I thought of Road Rage. I used to have that game for Gamecube and I hated it. It was basically a really bad ripoff of Crazy Taxi. Apparently Sega sued the developer for patent infringement because it was so similar to Crazy Taxi. I dunno, it's been a long time since I played it, so maybe I would have a different opinion of it now. I remember the thing I hated about it the most were the annoying comments passengers would make while you were driving. They would say the same thing over and over, it drove me crazy. I've never played Hit and Run, though. I might have to give it a try. Speaking of Simpsons games, have you ever played Virtual Bart for Genesis/SNES? I played that game when I was a kid (rented it, I think), and I remember it as being one of those games that was incredibly frustrating, yet strangely addictive. It's as if it pisses you off so much that you feel compelled to try to beat it. Know what I mean?
You really should. If you like The Simpsons then you'll love that game. It's not perfect though and can be quite annoying at times but over all it's a good game. Yeah, I had it on the SNES. Thought it was total shit back then but still played it for some reason. Basically anything by Flying Edge, LJN or Acclaim is shit IMO. Actually, all those companies are Acclaim. I wonder if I'm not the only one to have been happy when they finally went under? Thanks. There's more Telenet Japan love in the next few shows. (Wolf Team, Riot, Renovation and Laser Soft).
Retro Core 3 Volume 19 Out now on the Official Site and You Tube In volume 19 of Retro Core 3 I take a look at the 3 Mega Drive Double Dragon arcade games (Not including that awful Double Dragon 5, 1 on 1 fighter) as well as many other classics including Xexex, the arcade shooter by Konami, Beast Warriors on the Mega Drive is this shows shite, Bubblegum Crash for the PC Engine, Touhou Reiiden for the NEC PC98 and P.man on the Super Famicom. Another solid episode. A small suggestion, though: you should release the site version in a more commonly used video format, like h264. Usually this isn't a problem for me since I can play .wmv files on my computer, but lately I've been forced to use my PS3 as a media streaming device (since I can't connect my computer to my TV at the moment), and it was unable to play the latest version of Retro Core. I ended up using my laptop instead, but that's beside the point. Not many people use Windows Media Player these days, and it's not a freely available codec - so people using Linux, mobile devices, or videogame consoles (except for 360) can't play it. Almost all modern devices can play h264 files though, and they generally have a smaller filesize (and high video quality). There are many free programs that can convert video to h264. Just a suggestion.
