Shacknews reports that sony is already working on the PSP succesor, and that it wont use UMDs anymore but a HDD or a solid state media (read MS and stuff). [im]The Shack says that “a reliable source close to Sony†indicates the device is a successor rather than a redesign of the current system. It will have built in hard drive support from the beginning, and will not be using the UMD media format, either for games or for other content. It is unknown what format will be used in its stead. The device, which the source referred to only as "PSP 2," is currently in development, and may appear some time "in the next three years.". Nvidia recently announced that it has a new design contract with Sony, one which will apparently pay more than the company received for its work on the PlayStation 3's GPU. It seems fairly likely that the contract in question refers to this PSP successor, given Sony's history of working with Nvidia on game console technology.[/i] I wonder if after the big-flop the PSP may end up being, anybody is going to run for a PSP2 like they did before. Suddenly I'm glad I didn't bought a PSP Source
nevertheless a nice portable console, as in a nice piece of ass..ehr, hardware. I hope nintendo learns something from that big bright screen. I wouldn't mind the GameBoy Evolution having one screen instead of two, but touchscreen, and surely wouldn't mind if it was of the PSP caliber, although something like that would prove rather expensive for nintendo's taste in portables.
I doubt they'll give up UMD's any time soon. I know the movie studios are all close to stopping production of movie and audio UMDs, but Sony has a history of making cool shiney's that we all have to have, but their consistent use of proprietary media just to complicate things always bites them in the end, at least here in the US anyways. Mini-Disk or BetaMax, anyone?
I say sony will end up dumping the UMD since nobody, not the consumers nor the other media companies like it at all. The MD is another story, since it did perform kinda well, and is still living after 15 years.
so, no backward compatibility for the psp2? Sony shoot themselves in the foot, cause they'll need to restart from scratch, and nintendo isnt forgiving (and have backward compatibilty)
vader was living too.with breathing support and prosthetic arms and legs.is this the future one wants for their storage medium? lol
But the MiniDisc wasnt fast to catch on either.Hell its still a small fish of a format still.I dont think Sony would dump the UMD so soon.
Unless they start releasing great games right now, I doubt the PSP2 would've a better start with the scarce (to say the least) catalog from the PSP. Honestly I think the PSP will end up being Sony's 32X, and if they keep with this arrogant position when the PS3 comes out, then that'll be their Saturn.
Remember the good ol' days when we used to buy a new console/portable to play new games that were not capable of running on the current generation? I understand that backwards compatibility has become kind of standard, but as far as I am concerned, who the hell cares! I can list the number of times I've used this feature on one hand. -ServiceGames-
MD is recordable/rewritable, that's quite important. UMD is just for playback, and how many times can you bother watching the same movie? and only on a PSP? that way more limited than the appeal of the MD technology.
Psp 2 probably needs to be thinner. I would say it will be a optical media. Just how small is the questions.
Saying a company has "history" implies it has worked on prior products. Not one that has yet to ship. -hl718
In theory the PS3 would be prior to PSP2. Plus in the computer/game world, something that is just a couple years old is already history .
Ten to one all the games will be obtained via some downloadable service, like Itunes or something. Which makes a lot of sense actually, it works with music so why not with games? Still, I prefer having some form of removeable media that comes with a box, with packaging, that I can hold in my hand, etc. The day may come when there's nothing left to collect, then we ourselves will become a dying breed.
I'm quite sure that we went over all of this before, but there is a huge difference in downloading a 5Mb mp3 file and downloading a 700Mb or larger game file and having the means to store it indeffinately. I like being able to run to my local game shop and pick up a game for a quick fix while I am bored. Downloading a psp sized game file on my current connection will take me about 2 hours. It would be quicker to just go out and buy the damned thing. Not to mention, how many times have you bought a game while you were away from home and just needed to pass the time, this wouldn't really be possible with this scenario. -ServiceGames-
Thats what I was talking about some time ago. While SG excuse is not a small one (here we have more people without internet connections than in some 3rd world nations) it will be over soon. Think about EDGE: with this new system you dont need internet connection at all. The PSP2 could download the games from virtually any place that has cellphone signal.
