Okay, so why would it work sometimes if it's a problem with the modchip? Wouldn't it not work at all?

No, it could certainly be intermittent.

But really, you need another chip and another cable to pin point the fault.

You should also post pictures back and front of your chip, incase there is some stray solder shorting something,

    Sounds good, thanks :)

And sorry about the whole "It was just working!" thing, after a few days full of working on this I was getting a bit pissy...

I suspect that the power is the issue, I don't hear quite the same level of laser movement with the chip in, and the wire is pretty pitiful, any specific kind of wire I should use?

So would the disk spin if the chip isn't getting enough energy? I think that may be what's causing this.

the power to the drive is independent to the modchip, so yes - it would get power and spin

I see, it's just that it isn't spinning when the chip isn't hooked up to the power, so I just assumed :p

So I'll try a new wire and let you know how it goes, thanks!

If it doesnt detect a disk (or the drive) it wont spin. With the modchip getting no power, some of the signals are not getting to the console, as the chip sits between them.

That makes sense :) Thanks for this, honestly I'm learning so much about how these consoles work in general that it's invaluable information for the future, this being my first foray into modding and all.

Okay, so I've got it all fixed.
i added more insulation to the chip, and used a new wire.
there was TONS of solder on the power line, so I removed most if it and ta-da!
just goes to show, some times too little is better than too much :)
    Thanks everyone!

It just worked for a full 24 hours, never even one stutter.
I used my action replay to boot Metal Slug and it got stuck on loading.
now it's not working again... WHAT THE HECK?

It reads the disk as an audio CD. :/

It sounds more and more like your chip is just bad. You should probably get another chip that is confirmed as working and then swap it in to see if that fixes the issue. If so, then you know the original chip is just dead.

Not looking forward to paying more for another chip that may not work... but I guess I have too :/

I've contacted Sega-Style on the issue, hopefully I can exchange my chip... anyone else have any ideas in the meantime?
