Coming from someone who has doen a mod of this nature you can't lift pads there aren't pads. The video socket is were you solder th wires and those are just pins. Even an amateur could do this mod.
I've got two and they both use BNC connectors which aren't readily available for use with consoles. Not hard to make something but not everyone has the equipment and supplies I do on hand. Plus you're limited to 30" or so and CRT only where as I'm pretty sure there are LCDs sporting RGB capable SCART sockets in the UK. While I managed to score a 9" and 20" PVM for $25 this is by far the exception and not the rule.
All LCDs and Plasmas do have Scart sockets (or at least they had until 2010 when I last checked), but why in the world would you want to play RGB consoles on a high-resolution TV? That defeats the entire purpose of it... looks like shit tbh.
Coming from someone who has repaired more stuff than you have had hot dinners - dont under estimate what people can screw up. You can pull traces off quite easily, even on traces that run to a socket. Also, what do you think the pins connect to? thin air? (clue: pads) Judging from your handy work I currently have for repair, I wouldnt be so fast to jump in on this.
To me it seems pointless in involves modifying something inside of it. I guess it's like the auto button press program someone made for the XBOX with bluetac. Just pointless. Yet to try out S-video for the Saturn though. Notice any difference between the official and 3rd party ones?
s-video cables for the Saturn have been scarce for several months now. Try to impulse buy the shiftiest no name brand at an acceptable price anymore.
Getting a hold of broadcast monitors in the U.S. is a huge pain in the ass, never mind having to make a bnc cable. These monitors are meant for tv shows or news statiorns or medical places, they are not intended for consumer use. Problem is often these old tvs are bought from people who are in the industry trying to get rid of old stuff and sometimes they can ask outrageous prices like $150. Extremely rare you will find a thrift store or electronics used store that will have them. Ebay route possible but again is price. You could get it for cheap but then shipping runs you $75 or more due to weight. My brother and his friend are in the film industry and his friend has two sony pvm 2030 he gave to good will, when I told them he should of sold them to me he asked why. When I explained that collectors use them for the rgb, they both laughed so hard. Anyone in the industry thinks it's insane to use those tvs for rgb for old systems. Which is why you hardly find them in thrift or electronics stores, used for professional use not personal.
Whats that got to do with anything I said? I know how to do it, I am sure people can do it just fine. But to save $5? to possibly kill your system in the process? Not worth it, which is what I said.
I just wouldn't call the points you connect the wires to pads. I guess someone could mess this up using a soldering iron above 40watt. The bottom line is you have been doing reapirs for more than 4 years so you have probably seen alot of cooked boards from amateurs. Bottom line I am inclined to take what you say as the truth do to your experience.
I know its an easy mod, but I think you are under estimating the damage an amateur can do. Especially over a $5 saving - which is the only point I am trying to make. If someone is here asking, then they probably shouldnt be doing it.
We're also under estimating the prices of Saturn s-video cables. If ebay is any indication, right now they might actually be cheaper to buy in Europe than the US.
Yeah, even I've been considering this...I'm not ready to go to XRGB + scart yet as I have an amazing 36" 4:3 Sony CRT which looks amazing through s-video. But the cheapest I can get an off brand s-video cable is $45 and from the UK.
I don't have the space in my room. Myself I'd buy an XRGB, before going back to HDTV-less. No way am I settling for playing 360 & PS3 in SD to get a decent screen size. Yuck! (computer monitor is only like 24")
I'm sure you could make a good amount selling them to people in the US. I know I'm interested in it but when I have to pay near $45 I'm a lot less interested
If you have an svideo supplier that cheap, you'll be making money from needy Americans for a good cause!
