This may be a bad example, but I know that on the FDS, and in most computer filing systems, when a disk is marked for deletion, a simple byte or so is changed, allowing a disk to be written over. Maybe it's a similar case with these disks and if the data can be salvaged, it can be "unmarked." I dunno.

Data on magnetic media is never gone, it just hides.

Unless you happen to use a data shredding program, do a full format, or write over the data. :p

Sometimes even then, there's tiny traces of it there. It's just really expensive to recover. This is the reason the government completely destroys old hard drives with sensitive data on them.

Unfortunately I have more bad news. I finally got around to hooking the 64dd dev kit up again last night. I tried the two disks that wouldn't boot previously. It was quite simple to get them to run this time. I just had to go to Run then Go instead of using the resetdd command. I was so excited when the first one booted up. But it turned out to be Doshin the Giant. I played around with that for a while then decided to try the last disk. Disk #1. I figured it was #1 it had to be something good. But no it was another copy of Doshin the Giant. :(

But I don't need two copies of it haha. Plus I don't fully understand the game. I succesfully built a couple monuments but that was it. I even got lost in the middle of the ocean a few times before I figured out there was a map.

I remember that it was that thread who make me discover this forum btw. ;)

    Hi Corey,

Could you show us screenshots of your disks in operation, or informations on dates of their development.

    Thank you

Same, here. Well, I did check the non-forum site from time to time out of curiousity, but that thread got me lurking over the past many months. I've never been so excited to read something on the interenet!

I, too, would love to know about the state of these titles on the discs in comparison to the final verisons, as well as some pictures of it! Especially the dev setup, that would be interesting, as I only know of it in ms-paint-esque diagrams.

Indeed, I'd love to see some photos of this amazing hardware you lucky guys possess. Someday, I will own a 64DD!

This really is an urban legend more than anything for hard drives. One wipe on a hard drive is good enough that no one is gong to get anything back.

Sad end to the story (that it wasn't mother) but definately cool to know, after all these years, what was on those disks.
