So I finally spent some considerable time with my two N64 games, Starfox 64 is really growing on me though I don't like it as much as Panzer Dragoon. Bomberman 64...I have no idea what I'm supposed to be doing. and the Retrobit Controller I got is awesome, shockingly the standard N64 Pad I got with the dead system works and doesn't have a worn stick! Also after looking at my 2nd unit and my Dead N64, the dead one was dead on perchase, the Cart slot was busted and that's why it wouldn't work.
You can buy replacement thumbsticks for N64 controllers, so it wouldn't be a huge issue if it was broken. Just don't play Mario Party Is this your first N64? Here's my favorites that you gotta play! Ocarina of Time Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon Mischief Makers Majora's Mask Mystical Ninja 2 Super Mario 64 Perfect Dark
Technically my second...in a week's span. First working system. This is the controller I'm using Saturn-esque D-pad, modern standard Analog stick, Comfy as hell. As for Games... The list is getting long... very long, luckily they're cheap games and I am most defiantly getting an Everdrive 64 to play some of the more unattainable imports. Right now Mario Kart 64, F-Zero X, of course Mario 64 and Ridge Racer 64 are priorities. EVERY fighter for the N64 is also on the list since there aren't many of them. There are what 2 shmups on the N64 too? Daezemon and Star Solider?
There aren't many shmups on N64, another one is Bangaioh. The best fighting games on N64 are: Fighter Destiny 1/2 Mace the dark age Killer Instinct Gold Flying Dragons If you say the genre you are interested I'm sure many here would suggest the top games for them.
I would suggest using silicone grease to lubricate the joysticks for your controller. I do it to all mine and it makes a huge difference in wear and tear on the joystick.
Incidentally, that's what Nintendo started doing later in the N64's life to try and solve the problem
Wish I new of the grease trick years ago when I had my first N64 with standard controller. The stick got the famous wear problem from too much Mario 64... MY current controller is a Super Pad 64. Wasn't terribly costly and works good. I did have issues with the joystick not wanting to center for neutral but I solved that with some glue. Potentiometers were loose in the housing...
i thought about getting the retrobit controller but unsure about the shape the original controller was better for the likes of goldeneye and perfect dark with the 3 grips
It's a very nicely made comfortable controller that feels like the result of an N64 Pad having a one night stand with a Saturn Pad. Yeah, Rakuga kids is supposed to be really good too. I think the N64's biggest strength was it's Racing Library and sheer number of exclusives?
Star Fox 64 is a great game. but if you are looking for good N64 rail shooters, go with Sin & Punishment! Also, I think that Panzer Dragoon Zwei is much better than both Panzer Dragoon and Star Fox 64. If you haven't played either Panzer Dragoon Zwei or Sin & Punishment, I recommend you go out and get both games right now!
There's the matter of getting Sin and Punishment to fit in my N64. which with no sodering iron is a pain in the ass.
I have to say that S&P is good, but it's one of those rare cases where the sequel that's released much later is far better.
I don't have the right security bit screw driver. What I do have are 2 N64s, alot of patience and a garage full of hacking tools
well.. get cracking then! im not sure what it actually entails and how much effort is needed, im still on the lookout for a n64, my efforts have been hampered by my xbox360 controller going funky at the worst possible time so my n64 money went on a new controller
Let's face it. The N64 was hands down the best of its generation. The only thing the Saturn and PS1 had going for them was the fact the CD based system could have larger games. Largest commercial N64 game I know of was 64 megabytes. While the PS1 and Saturn were 32 bit, the N64 was (surprise surprise) 64 bit. That alone made it a lot more powerful. Now if someone were to make a flashcart with more than 64 megs of ROM space we might see some major cool hacks and ports that will run on the real deal versus emulator that supports monster sized ROMs.
well the n64 had the DD cd addon so im sure the n64 could handle the extra data and also cd quality audio? that would be fairly awesome. imagination > innovation.
The 64drive can load data from the memory card while code is running. The 64DD was a zip disk-esque format and only held 64MB. You could hold some CD quality audio on that if that's all you used the disk for, but not too much. I don't know the technical limits of reading data like that from it though.
