If it's too hard for me, I'll get a pro to do it. Probably will send it to Benheck once I have the money.

Well I used the word "destroy" as a joke...heh.

I was thinking about a nice hand painted character on top with some Japanese kanji. Something where the white areas are still showing on most of the console so it still looks like a Pure White. I'm wondering if it could be done in a way that looks good enough to justify doing it as opposed to just some cheap looking visual mod.

It means Wapanese. My definition of it wouldn't be a White guy who thinks he's Japanese, but any Non-Japanese person liking Japan more than everything else. Pretty much a Japanophile, and imo, you'd have to be crazy to move to Japan. But if you're dedicated (crazy) enough to actually LEARN the Japanese language and stuff, you're already 10,000 steps above the average Wapanese. Most have a crazy idea of learning Japanese in 1 month so they can play actual Japanese RPGs, read mangas, watch Anime, etc. only to fail miserably.

Speaking of them, I don't really get annoyed at them for what they like, its just most of them I've seen on the internet have been annoying and childish beyond belief. That, and they have pushy opinions a lot of the time, too.

That would be the equivalent of me saying the Dreamcast is shit and deserves to be in a trash can, and anyone who disagrees is a fanboy or has no taste in games. I don't think that, but I'm just saying.

EDIT: Let me rephrase what I said about Wapanese. Any Non-Asian person liking Japan more than everything else.

Ah, now I know. thanks Mr.Casual. I guess it's the same as a Wigger then or my personal new word that I call some Japanese on TV, Jaggers  Some of those guys do think they are black ! I have a few, well 2 coloured friends here in Japan and both piss them selves laughing at these Jaggers not to mention the name I made up for them.

Colored? That term is still used?

Anyway, this thread is getting offtopic, like most other threads! :110:

I'd definitely suggest that, but hey, it's your money!

Yakumo, have you ever played the Japanese version of Persona? Or the US version?

Anyways, this fits what you are saying.

    [IMG][IMG]

This character in Persona was made Black for the US release. Not too sure about what he was changed to in the European release, though.

It will definitely decrease the value of the system:

If you would be upset if it goes down in value, do not do it.
But, if you plan on keeping it, go for it!

JG: I'd say at least do a test on a normal black Xbox first. Spray that white, see how it comes out. The money you could make selling the ltd edition one would more than cover the cost of a black unit and paint, I'm sure. And 1000 isn't very many units, so it would be a shame to lose one.

Cheese: I don't think vac-forming would work very well. You might be looking at injection moulding, and that would be expensive for a one-off. Mind you, vac-forming will be pretty expensive, too.

Vac-forming is pretty much having a positive former to look as you want it. You are somewhat restricted, in that it has to have "angled" sides. Think pyramid - the former is going to pull out easily. You then heat up a piece of plastic, drop it over the former, and suck the air from between them. This pulls the molten plastic over the former tightly, creating the desired shape. You then cool it off, and have your final product.

To me, this method creates things like seed trays. OK, they can be more complex than seed trays, and thicker, but they always come out looking like that. I don't see any way to create screw holes, for example... it is all one thickness of plastic. Also, you're working to a flat base.

Take a look at this page for more info:

    http://www.technologystudent.com/equip1/vacform1.htm

Think about a console shell. You have the outside shape, and then the parts inside for the screws to go into, and other parts to join to, etc. With vacuum forming, I don't see how you could make these internal parts. You are forming around a solid object.

For what you want to do, you'll need some very good CAD plans, give it to a company that do one-off injection moulding, and expect to pay, hmm, I'd say $2000 to have a "prototype" made.

Smashing an N64 DD with a hammer will make it clear red? Can anyone confirm or deney this?

Not if it was a clear N64 ;-)

The reason you don't see new console cases come up very often would be exactly that - it is so damned expensive to do!

You may find a cheaper company that takes longer. IF you were able to make the mould yourself, then you might find someone who would charge quite a bit less just for the injection moulding stage. It is really the only way you'll be able to achieve what you want. Vacuum forming isn't precise enough, and even that would cost quite a bit (maybe $200+), especially if you wanted the former made.
