Another thing you have to be aware of if you are shipping internationally is that courier services typically have a minimum density for packages - and if you ship something that comes in below it then you will get charged based on the dimensions of the outer shipping box and not the actual weight - so for your example of a 5x5 inner packing in a 10x10 overpack you could potentially be charged 8 times as much as just shipping the inner box on it's own.

In practice, it's not normally this bad simply because the things that need the most packing tend to be heavy (or at least dense) in the first place - but it's quite possible to double the shipping cost even with fairly moderate outer packing.

I never thought about that. Good point. That shouldn't too hard to avoid if you plan ahead and do some research.

Sorry to comment on an old post. This is about the thread in general.

Selling on Ebay is expensive as far as postage costs are concerned. We as sellers are constantly trying our best to make sure our items don't go that couple of mm over so it doesn't cost us double postage.

Some people are lazy with packaging but some people are scared. PS1 game costs £1.20 to post, Dreamcast game, £2.60, minor difference in the two.

Small parcels that used to cost £2.60 now cost £5.65, with £3.60 being inbetween and the weight being the main contributing factor.

Whatever the exact prices the size difference from £1.20 postage to £2.60 postage is so small, you have to be so careful. One wrongly folded side or bubble wrap not being wrapped tight means the seller is out of pocket.

In this instance, with an item costing that much, I would have wrapped it up a lot. So not to comment so much on people being lazy but packages are thin because Royal Mail are tightening the noose around our necks. Not to mention Ebay and Paypal fees. Anyway...

I'm still wondering what the item was and whether Kevin will ever let us know and maybe post some pics :p

    I'm curious too, but
sounds like it could take a while - depending on how cooperative the seller is...

Judging by how poorly he shipped the package at $129... probably not at all. Wonder if he purchased insurance on the package?
